heavenly7 Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 Other posts suggest Halfords five year anti freeze is the same / as good as Comma. Nearly bought some today but the bottle says dont exceed a 75% mix with water if anti freeze protection isnt to be lost. Is the recommendation to use it without adding water and is it the same stuff as Comma? How much anti freeze do you need for a complete fill? Halfords all sell a compatible additive which is "claimed" to prolong water pump life. Has anyone used this? Finally are all water weters OK to use and are these available from good motor factors or dealers - Halfords dont seem to sell one.
CharlesElliott Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 My understanding is that the 'new' Halfords 5 year coolant is Comma Xstream Red. It's pre-mixed, therefore there should be no need to add water. For a K-series, around 5l without a heater, 5.5l with. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
heavenly7 Posted November 22, 2003 Author Posted November 22, 2003 Any other thoughts please as I was going to change the anti freeze today.
Bob Corb Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 The Halfords stuff I bought 4 weeks ago came in a dark blue 5 litre container(it was £15.99). It was neat and therefore needs to be diluted approx 50% with water. Directly opposite halfords was an audi dealer who was selling it diluted for the same price! You will need about six litres of mixed coolant so a 5 litre bottle of concentrate will leave you with plenty for top ups etc. The same product is sold all over the world in different guises. I think these guys actually developed it..http://www.arteco-coolants.com have a read. Bob
heavenly7 Posted November 23, 2003 Author Posted November 23, 2003 I am completely confused now. John Howe and others recommend using the anti freeze neat I think - is the anti freeze Halfords 5 year or Comma in fact mixed with water in the bottle any way or if not what provides the "solvent".
CharlesElliott Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 It may be my fault - I hadn't checked properly and it may be that Halfords Advanced anti-freeze (which is what I and Bob are talking about I think) does need diluting. Just follow whatever it says on the bottle. It's possible to get Xstream Red ready diluted or undiluted so it doesn't mean there is a difference - just depends on how much you are prepared to pay for water Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
