_Tim_ Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 Now that I've got the right bolts for the FIA cage sorted out, and the chassis holes 'corrected' so they line up properly, I belevie I need to fit the rear wheel protection bar next. But there is no mention of this in the assembly guide, and I have no fixings marked for it's use. Can someone tell me how it fixes and which bolts/washers etc to use? Cheers! p.s. more build diary updates uploaded today. - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
Grubbster Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 I'm sure Charles will be able to help with this - drop him a mail. See some photo's of my Roadsport build here Edited by - Grubbster on 21 Nov 2003 11:25:25
CharlesElliott Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 Front bolt should just be the cut down (length) bolt normally used for the front cage mounting. Rear bolt is standard A-Frame mounting. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
_Tim_ Posted November 21, 2003 Author Posted November 21, 2003 Was your boot cover bar pre-drilled like wot it says in the manual it is? Mine isn't. - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
CharlesElliott Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 It was - but the holes are small and difficult to feel through the vinyl (which isn't pre-drilled). The assembly guide says to remove the bar if you are fitting harnesses. I removed it, cut it into strips around the harness bolts and then put it back in . Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
_Tim_ Posted November 21, 2003 Author Posted November 21, 2003 I presume you had to sew it back up again after? Mine looks like it's stitched in both ends. - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
CharlesElliott Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 I cut a hole in the vinyl for the harness bolt to go through. This was then big enough to remove the strip (by bending). I then cut the other holes in the vinyl and cut the strip into sections to fit between the holes. I spent a disproportionate amount of time on the boot cover . I ignored the assembly guide and used the original popper holes, rather than drilling a new one in the centre of the harness bolts. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
Frying Pan Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 Spooky I was just about to search for more info on the boot cover - one of this afternoon's jobs! I'll go back to the garage again 😬 Cheers Guy See some pictures of the build here
_Tim_ Posted November 21, 2003 Author Posted November 21, 2003 Same here Guy, since the durable dotty poppy potty thingy arrived today. 😬 Tempted to just stick the 🙆🏻ing thing down and be done with it! - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
Grubbster Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 I just removed the metal trip and binned it. The poppers that you put along the rail are used for the tonneau if you have one, so spacing may be important. Guy - have you put the seat back carpet in (you won't have one Tim) on mine this goes under the roll bar flange, the boot cover goes over it, then the harness bolts go through the lot. Hopefully there is space to get them in under the 2 diagonals you have on the roll bar. Durable dotty potty thing has been discussed at length before. Just take care not to make a hole in the wrong place like I did, takes a while to do this job and it is worth doing it neatly! See some photo's of my Roadsport build here
CharlesElliott Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 I think I had some time on my hands waiting for some bits to arrive 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary

Firefly Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 carpet in an Academy car didn't realise they had added a concourse section ito this years champs!! Word of warning before you fit the wheel intrusion bar - check it will pass the SVA with it on. I put mine and the side impact bar on after the test on my car earlier this year. happy building
CharlesElliott Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 No carpet in the Academy cars. It's just Steve and Guy with their 'Caterham's for softies'. They've even got heaters! Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
Grubbster Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 Don't tell me that was another shortage in your kit . . . . With the number of missing bits on your car you will never get through scrutineering - it will be under weight! See some photo's of my Roadsport build here
CharlesElliott Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 Oops. You weren't supposed to see that. 😬 Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
Frying Pan Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 'Caterham's for softies' eh? Race ya! [Grubbster, nick his keys!] 😬 Guy See some pictures of the build here
