StewartG
Hi Julian, it always seems to be me answering your questions but as there's no other comments... Are you sure your angle drive is completely knackered? My speedo regularly stops working because the angle drive comes loose from the gearbox, this allows the little square springy drive shaft to wear round and not spin the cable. Last time this happened I removed the angle drive flushed all the dirt and grit out with WD40 removed the blanking screw and relubricated it thru the screw hole and checked it was running reasonably freely (although there was still some frictional drag). I reassembled with a new drive shaft that cost about £1, this shaft just pulls out of the gearbox but it needs a good pull and Voila it's still working. Blatman
Have you dismantled it yetquestion.gif The last time mine packed up, the drive peg (springy square thing) snapped of with the top few mm in the gearboxmad.gif Can't get it out (so far) and no bright ideas spring to mind except.......ditch the mechanical guage and get a lecky onethumbsup.gif. I'm buggered if I'm gonna remove and strip the box for a 1 pound partmad.gifsad.gif
julians
Yep its definately broken, when you turn the bit that goes into the gearbox, the other end does not turn at all.
StewartG
Blatman, on the opposite side of the gearbox to the speedo drive is a sort of tap in sealing plate, like a small paint can lid. I haven't done it but I suspect this can be levered off, like a paint can lid, to reveal the gear-wheel that the springy drive shaft presses into. If my suspicion is correct then you're sorted. EFA
Blatman, Stewarts right, but it is a pig of a job! Good luck! For info I had a box where the metal gear on the output shaft would move up an ddown the shaft and out of mesh with the nylon worm. This happened 3 times before I discovered quaife had machined my output shaft undersize at this point!!! StewartG
Arnie, why is it a pig of a job? I've not taken that tin can lid off but I had imagined that the speedo drive "works" were under there for all to see and I also assumed that the gearbox oil was not. Blatman
Arnie Is it a pig of a job 'cos of the lack of room, or for another reason, as Stewart suggestsquestion.gif I've been putting this off for a very long time now, so I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get the engine and 'box out. I'm just a lazy bugger, but I'm also too tight to give it to a workshop to do. C'est la vie as we say at Le Manssmile.gif
