K200CSR Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 I'm looking for a clutch alignment tool, can anyone recommend a good ready-to-use one?I came across https://www.rwdmotorsport.com/product/clutch-alignment-tool-fors/ but I'm not 100% sure it's the correct size.Cheers
simon_h Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 A bit of 15mm copper plumbing pipe and enough turns of masking tape to be snug in the friction plate has done me well for a long time.
Wrightpayne Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 I have a universal metal one which works well. It has a couple of different sized ends (for the spigot) and a few collars for the plate. All have a slight taper so fit a range of sizes. Similar to this one but with less pieces... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-39223-Universal-Clutch-Aligning/dp/B001FCN0DG/ref=asc_df_B001FCN0DG/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310657832094&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10299829670999141952&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046166&hvtargid=pla-563588156120&psc=1&th=1&psc=1
7 wonders of the world Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 old first motion shaft from previous gearbox upgrades,
Eriedor Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 I've got his one. Works greathttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-52329-Clutch-Mate-Alignment/dp/B0001K9UZU
ECR Posted July 20, 2022 Posted July 20, 2022 An old first motion shaft is essential if you have a twin plate clutch. The standard aftermarket offerings can't synchronise the splines in the two plates
K200CSR Posted July 20, 2022 Author Posted July 20, 2022 Wrightpayne and Eriedor thank you for the links, appreciated!7Wonders and Ecr, in the absence of an old first motion shaft would something like https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-HELP-14503-Clutch-Alignment/dp/B000C5C74K work the same way?If so, can someone let me know the number of splines, the OD of the splines and the OD of the pin that goes into the spigot (??) bearing in the end of the crank? Failing that does anyone have a spare 1st motion shaft laying around that I can purchase?Cheers
revilla Posted July 20, 2022 Posted July 20, 2022 Dont buy that plastic took from Amazon, I did once and they're totally useless! Just sloppy, you move the clutch plate all over the shop with it in place. The first motion shaft option is the best. Get in touch with one of the transmission shops like Road & Race Transmissions and see if they've got any old ones lying around. I did, they did, and they let me have it for nothing. Tell them what it's for to get the right length etc.
ECR Posted July 20, 2022 Posted July 20, 2022 Unless you have a multiplate clutch, you don't need a splined tool. The standard tools will work fine
K200CSR Posted July 20, 2022 Author Posted July 20, 2022 This might be a route I'm taking!Engine & gearbox out this week and then decide what to do.Cheers for the feedback
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted July 20, 2022 Area Representative Posted July 20, 2022 Smaller diameter dowel than holes then build up with gaffer tape to suit varying diameters. Works every time !
simon_h Posted July 20, 2022 Posted July 20, 2022 #8 The ford spigot bearing is 15mm id. Hence my 15mm bit of copper pipe and tape.
K200CSR Posted July 25, 2022 Author Posted July 25, 2022 Ok to answer my own question:Spigot Bearing portion of the shaft 15mm (cheers to Simon_h)Number of splines = 23Spline shaft diameter = 25mm so I guess 1"
