7oaks Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 Received my aero screen from Caterham today. Was expecting the screen to have the poppers already fitted (the ones that you press onto the tonneau cover studs on the scuttle) but they are provided separately. Is this an easy job, do I need a special tool? Also not sure how big to drill the holes in the carbon screen. No instructions were provided. Any help much appreciated, thanks
ScottR400D Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 The screens easy enough to drill. Maybe start with a smaller hole than the one you intend to end up with. The poppers are fitted just the same as in the hood or boot cover. I guess they can be done with the punch and anvil that CC supply though I have a proper crimping tool for them which made it very easy. Another club member in Norwich has it at the moment. Where are you based?
7oaks Posted June 24, 2021 Author Posted June 24, 2021 I'm in Sevenoaks, Kent. Do you know the make/size of the crimping tool, I maybe able to borrow one a bit closer to me?

Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted June 24, 2021 Area Representative Posted June 24, 2021 Or the affordable option if you can not borrow the more sophisticated £300+ tool (how often will you use it?)From our friends at "Soft Bits for Sevens" £5.25https://www.softbitsshop.co.uk/press-stud-tool-420-p.asp
ScottR400D Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 £300 +? Are they really? I paid £150 for mine and it's been worth it. You can get a perfectly square, even, crimp every time and it's been used by a few of my local club mates too. I never found the hammering type very satisfactory. They are cheap though!
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted June 24, 2021 Area Representative Posted June 24, 2021 Fair enough Scott. I just don't need to fit press studs often.I believe Soft Bits will also hire out the crimping tool.
Support Team andy_harries Posted June 25, 2021 Support Team Posted June 25, 2021 I founs a small bolt through the middle works, mainly because its a second hand aeroscreen that didn't have a popper, and I had a spare set without the rear portion. .
7oaks Posted June 25, 2021 Author Posted June 25, 2021 Thanks, was thinking of do something like that, glad to see its an option!
aerobod - near CYYC Posted June 25, 2021 Posted June 25, 2021 A pop rivet can also do the job well, with a supporting washer on the other side.
