Graham Hutton Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Any advice on splitting the top ball joint? I notice that Caterham make a specific tool here https://caterhamparts.co.uk/tools/6700-ball-joint-splitter-top-wishbone-ball-joint.html which looks brilliant.I want to change the gator on one of my top joints at some point so if that tool is the best option I wonder if there is anyone near me in the Southwest who might have one I could borrow for 5 minutes :-)
Tazio Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Graham, Dave Gemzoe, a Club member, makes a device to do this, and is far more cost effective than CCs offering., I think its around £45.He is on FB, or can be found at www.gemzoe.com, I have no connection with Dave other than as a satisfied customer.
Graham Hutton Posted May 26, 2021 Author Posted May 26, 2021 Thanks v much Tazio. I'll try to track him down :-)
SM25T Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 You can just use a nut and bolt to press the taper pin out. Fit between underside of pin and top of casting below and unscrew nut and bolt to press pin out and break taper.
Grant_7 Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I will second the Dave Gemzoe ball joint splitter. I bought one earlier this year and it's perfect for the job. Great usage instructions supplied too.
ScottR400D Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I have one of the CC ones. Works fine but is more expensive than the Gemzoe type.
Guy Lowe Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I use the Gemzoe Motorsport tool, great bit of kit and sensibly priced
Graham Hutton Posted May 26, 2021 Author Posted May 26, 2021 Thanks everyone. The Gemzoe website is down at the moment but I'll order one as soon as it's up and running. I appreciate the adviceGraham
Guy Lowe Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Graham #8Give Dave a ring on TEL. 07884 432 125, he prefers telephone orders at the moment and you will probably get it before the weekend.
john milner Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 I can't comment on what is best or cheapest but I have one of these and it works:https://www.halfords.com/tools/hand-tools/automotive-tools/laser-ball-joint-separator-scissors-694406.html
