revilla Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 A friend is replacing a very early 1.4K engine in a car with the earlier main vehicle loom with a stock VVC EU3 160 engine.I've supplied him with a new engine wiring loom and he needs to replace the original (13-Way Econoseal) connector on the main vehicle loom with the later "Grey Plug" (14-Way Sumitomo 090). I've figured out all the connections.Econoseal is rated at 10A per terminal. I've seen the fuel pump on my car draw well above this for a short period on startup, but not continuously. I think the most likely scenario is that Caterham just ran the connector transiently beyond the specified current limit but it got me thinking ...Does anyone know if the very early 1.4 Ks may have been fitted with a different (lower capacity) fuel pump? I'm just slightly concerned that the pump in the car may be a lower powered unit that might not be able to meet the fuel delivery demands of a 160.Or maybe I'm worrying about nothing! If anyone has any info, I'd be grateful if they could put my mind at rest. Thanks,Andrew
Wrightpayne Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I have a '98 1.6 K series if you want me to measure (dia) of any wires or take pictures of wiring plugs / loom parts.Ian
TomB Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I fitted an uprated pump from Merlin motorsport to replace my older 1.4 pump which was suspect of not coping at higher engine speeds. I didn't touch any wiring or fuses (the thought never entered my mind!) - and I've not had any problems over a good fwe years since I changed it. The engine is now a 1.8k running about 150bhp.
revilla Posted November 6, 2020 Author Posted November 6, 2020 @Wrightpayne - Thanks very much for the offer but I'm not sure if measuring up the loom will give me definitive answers. @TomB - Do you have a link to the pump you bought please? Given the age of the car, the fact that it's currently undergoing a pretty comprehensive rebuild and getting a new engine, a change to an uprated pump may be a sensible precaution whatever was originally fitted. @Englishmaninwales - BM received thanks, and good to know. I'll try to get round to replying to your other BM as well!
TomB Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/fuel-pump-landrover-4-0-6443528-itp101It fitted the in tank cradle with a bit of fettling.
