MBB Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 Putting some new to me wheel/tyres on and the front right is rubbing badly on the wing stayIs there an easy fix for this? The left hand side has about 2mm clearanceThe wheels in question - old wheels on the back
Jonathan Kay Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 What are the old and new wheels and tyres? Can you add a front-on shot to show the lateral position of the tyre in the wing?Jonathan
MBB Posted July 30, 2017 Author Posted July 30, 2017 Front shotOld wheels were minilights with Avon ZV3 165/60R14 tyres onNew wheels have Toyo Proxes T1R 205/45R16 87w - they were previously on a S3 without any problems as far as I know. Brought off Baz, whos a club member
Wrightpayne Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 There are 3 sizes of wingstay so previous car may have had taller stays. There is a race, 13/14 and 15/16 inch stays.Ian
OliverSedlacek Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 Adjustment of stays with suitable application of leverage worked for me.
SM25T Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 But only after removing the wings ... while you bend the stays !!
Gnockoff Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 The obvious answer to this is that those wheels ( plus tyres) are too big for the car. 16 inch wheels are not particularly recommended in any case.
mudguard Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 These look like black-painted HPCs? After having lived with them on an SV, I can't recommend them. They're much less forgiving of uneven road surfaces and low grip situations than smaller lighter wheels. I'd gently suggest that the car will prefer to be driven much more conservatively than previously. All IMO.
SM25T Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 The front wheels in your photo look horrendous compared to the rears !
Tazio Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 You should consider why 16inch wheels were discontinued on a 7....as clearly they do not improve the dynamics of the car, and only a blind man would consider they improve the appearance IMHO of course.By the way I built an HPC with 16 inch wheels......so I do know the difference...
DJ. Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 I can see why you want to change your wheels as they don't fit the black/yellow theme. Maybe they would look better if refinished in black? Duncan
Jonathan Kay Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Maybe they would look better if refinished in black?Photoshop?Jonathan
Jonathan Kay Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Thin wheel spacer? That's what I wondered... and asked for the front-on shot...NB: Usual precautions.Jonathan
Tazio Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 I do try Colin. The reality is that the car works better on 13 inch wheels, is ok for touring on 15s, but 16s...no way...... which is why so few cars are still on them... Never nice to hear if a chap has spent his hard earned but hey ho...
MBB Posted August 2, 2017 Author Posted August 2, 2017 I'm going to pick up some spacers from Baz this weekend, they were fitted to his car when he brought it with these wheels.Never really liked the minilights, but its taken me 6 years to get round to changing them. The new wheels are a bit of an experiment to see if they work, if not I'll sell them on and keep looking.Car is 99% used on the road so track performance is not a priority.
ScottR400D Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 The 16s are quite a bit larger in diameter, are you able to lower the car accordingly?
Colin Cooper Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Tazio,You pays your money....................I run my Zetec 175 on 14 185/60's that suit me. There is also the question of a car being 'over tyred'. I have never had an incident with the tyres I use.Col
MBB Posted August 6, 2017 Author Posted August 6, 2017 Spacer fitted, front wheels now spin freely, backs put onOnly had a chance to do a couple of miles, no issues yet. I may come down to Pool on friday to give the car a decent run.
