virden Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 I have twin pot brakes (one piston each side) on my 1996 X/F Super sprint, will someone please tell what the thickness of a new pad is, i.e. from wearing surface to back plate surface that touches the piston. Also what is the maximum safe extent the pistons can protrude from the calipers under braking. Thanks
Mankee Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 If they are the "standard" Triumph Herald two-pots that use the MGB533 pad shape, the internet says 14.4mm thickness from new.
PhilR Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 I have just purchased a set and they are 13.4 mm They come with a set of 4 rubber self adhesive pads the same shape as the shoe face. Include this and it is 14.4 Are these to attach to the back to act as anti squeal shims. They are the same shape as the shoe but would interfere with the current metal shims if used together. Phil
Mankee Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 They are anti-squeal shims and are optional. I don't bother using them myself. Some people use copper slip on the back and edges of the pad to try to reduce noise.
DJ. Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 I didn't bother with those pads last time and used copperslip and they squealed badly. I then fitted the pads and they were much better. My car didn't come with metal shims though.
