Jonathan Kay
Can you get a multimeter?Does it crank and start on a good jump from another vehicle?Does the ignition warning light go out when you've got it started?JonathanPS: Where are you?PPS: Wait for the Bonnie Tyler jokes. Jason E
Currently in saumur I have no multimeter and waiting for breakdown to jump , would it run fine once started with bad battery and do they go that quick it is 10 year old
Jonathan Kay
Lots of 7 batteries fail within 10y: not sure why.As a first approximation:Starts on external jump but not own battery: starter and engine OK, but battery or cables or connections not OK.Starts on push but not on external jump: engine OK but starter etc isn't.While you're waiting;1 Start inspecting and wiggling the relevant leads and earths. 2 Do the headlamps come on at all when the engine isn't running?3 Ignition warning light as above? If the alternator etc is working it might run fine with a duff battery once it's started.JonathanPS: Great local wine for dinner.
elie boone
First port of call would be to look at the level in your battery cells, top up if needed, if that doesn't work replace the battery. Unless your battery have a massive short inside you will always be able to run on the out put of the alternator.
SM25T
Speaking from experience .... when your battery fails completely ... you need to be close to Elie's house !
DJ.
Yes, I have had a battery fail once like that. Started fine, one long run, stopped for petrol and then nothing. Once jumped it ran fine.
Jonathan Kay
PS: If you're now looking for somewhere to stay I've got recommendations for a hotel, chambre d'hôtes and campsite in Fontevraud, about 15km SE of Saumur.Jonathan
Jason E
Well started fine with jump which I think means battery , checked levels 2 are low , bad maintenance on my part , next thing is to source a battery , are the banner 53034 a bit special or will I be able to get something? Jonathan Kay
In your position and in a hurry I'd use anything that fits, but watch out for different terminal types. You can get adaptors for some types. If you can wait a bit I'll look for Powervamp sellers near you.Jonathan
Jonathan Kay
And is the ignition light off once it's running?Jonathan
Matty7
I though the battery was special to CC but the shop "Roady" (French Halfords) supplies Banner batteries, they are small shops so may not have a 53034 in stock where you are but a few weeks back both the La Rochelle branches did have the exact ones on the shelf. About 100 Euro from memory but not sure as didn't by myself as going Lithium Ion.

Jason E
Can't thank you chaps enough , well lights all go out when started , so I think it must be battery, my thoughts where , bad earth , can't be that as it would not have started with jump , Fia master switch again I think it starts fine with jump it shouldn't be that , so bearing in mind 10 years old its the battery. I will try today , so basically if its fits its good
Jason E
Meant to say I will try to buy one
Jonathan Kay
Agree with that logic, but bad connections or a tired relay can make all the difference between a marginal battery working or not. As well as the new battery have a good look and preferably a clean when that's convenient.Jonathan
SM25T
You can use anything 12V and say 20 Amp hour ..... for example batteries from a Golf trolley
Jason E
OK so on this occasion size is everything☺
ECR
The larger supermarkets generally sell batteries ...
SM25T
If you buy something thinner ... use a bit of wood beside the battery as a spacer.
Curly
I ended up with a motobike battery with a similiar failure You might which might be more readily available - took the banner banner into shop and matched it by size turned out to be about 2 mm bigger so battery tray needed "adjusting"
Jason E
Exactly the same as above but i think it was a mini tractor/lawnmower 28 amp. Cant remember make but 60 euros and 1or 2mm bigger (seemed tge same in the shop) so a bit of fettling and its all done , no terminal covers so need to sort that out at home, this all adds to the joy of Caterham ownership! Mick Day
Had this happen a few times:Once it was a poor engine earth: working one minute, turn engine off, after 5 minutes nothing, not even headlights.Another time duff battery. And finally duff starter. OK when cold but when hot the battery wasn't man enough to overcome the increased electrical resistance, & maybe partial mechanical seizure when hot. Coupled with a failed/failing fuel pump relay so really a fun day out!Good luck!
