johnpbransfield
Just had the gear lever off to grease the bearing.Do I need to grease the selector fork at the foot of the lever or should other parts be kept free of grease. When I took it off the fork and surrounding areas where grease free. Thanks in advance
TomB
Interesting, I've not done this before as its not in the service guide. Can you tell me more?
Titanium7
I had an issue with a stiff gear lever caused by corrosion on the ball and found the greasing did not help (believe it's a dry bearing) so it was a replacement spherical bearing in the end. Mankee
John's (MOCA2CV) useful guide, assuming you have the Quaife rose-jointed linkage:http://www.myothercarsa2cv.co.uk/howto/glbearing.htmI chucked a load of grease on the fork at the bottom of the lever that goes into the saddle rail clip. However, I do run an uprated hard nylon clip.
SM25T
Dribble something like ACF50 down the gear lever on to the bearing.
DJ.
I always put a bit of grease on the selector part of the gear lever. With the large bearing, I think it is meant to be dry like a rose joint bearing. However, water sits on it and causes corrosion. I decided to grease mine but didn't want water and grit to fill up the well above the bearing, so I bought a Rover SD1 steering rack gaiter off ebay, cut it down and used cable ties to attach it over the gear lever shaft and bearing, fits nicely under the leather gaiter and when I had the box out recently it was all nice and clean and dry in there
johnpbransfield
The bearing looks good and clean so I have re greased everything ready to reassemble. Thanks for your help.
Mechanical Moz
I did similar to DJ, cutting down an old CV boot from a classic Mini. After cleaning the bearing there was a small amount of play which disappeared once I packed it with grease. Also put a smear of grease on the selector fork. Julian H
HiWhat sort of grease should (if any) when fitting a new saddle bush of my 6 speed? Is replacing it a simple job? Is there anything else that would be wise to check or do at the same time? Thanks.
Julian H
My saddle bush is here, can anyone assist with information [as post above] please? Thanks
Duckpit
JulianI did my saddle bush recently on a type 9, not difficult at all, long nose pliars to pull out the old one and then the same pliars to push on again. My new one was very very tight and I shave a bit off, bench grinder, to get it to fit. Box is now a lot tighterI cant think of anything else that you could do at the same time Nick
DJ.
I used castrol LM grease. Getting the gear lever mechanism out of the housing can be tricky, I always apply copperslip so it doesn't corrode in and watch you don't bruise your knuckles on the dash as it comes free.
