Tony Martyr
They are such sods to get out of a k series engine that I suspect many owners don't know what the plugs look like. Question is when I finally get my QED TB modified 1600k back running should I change the plugs from the Caterham supplied to something that runs cooler, particularly now I'm converted to a wasted spark system that is harder on the plugs. What is the expereience of the tuned fraternity?
Alex Wong1697456877
I tried running cooler plugs but they fouled when starting from cold. I've gone back to the normal plugs. Different engine obviously. Alex
Peter Carmichael
Tony, I can thoroughly recommend NGK racing plugs. They are expensive but of a non-projected design and even their coldest rating (9) are not foulling in my engine. I have a set of 8s kicking around as well. Caterham's plugs are I think 7s in the NGK range. On top of the conductivity away from the tips, the non-projected design is supposed to give extra protection from detonation. NCWTSJASC. Roger King advised to go for the coldest possible plug and only go a grade hotter if the foulling was bad. Shall I get someone to put my spare set in the post? Mike Bees
Given that Tony's engine is only mildly tweaked (a Supersport with bodies I think?) I would have thought that race plugs are a bit over the top - if they work then fine but they're quite pricy IIRC. Roadgoing VHPDs use Champion C6YCC, I've used these in my rather-more-tweaked engine and they've been fine. They're cheap. Mike
Alex Wong1697456877
I tried Champion plugs and they really did cause more misfires. 7 grade NGK's seem ok with my car. 8's caused some fouling. Maybe I could lean off the cold engine temp compensation on the map cos once it was warm, it was fine. Alex
Mike Bees
Alex - they work fine in a K-series smile.gif Mike
Petrolhead
I used to work in an auto accessory shop and we changed from selling Champion to NGK plugs as we were sick of getting faulty Champion plugs returned. We nver had a NGK plug returned. Also the NGK's always seem to give a smoother, more reliable spark in the shops rally car.
Tim Seipel
Tony Champions work fine in K Series. For the tune you intent to use, try the Champion RC 6 VPYC. As fitted to some Golf GTi cars (16V I think) also sold in Halfords. They will be cold enough but with the shrouded insulator are less prone to cold fouling. I've used them for 4 years - no problems at all. They won't wear out either.
