Annoying rattles

7s have them. Lots of them but that's part of their charm however my WRX has had one for over three years and I've hunted high and low under the dashboard trying to find something lose. For the life of me I couldn't find it.

On Tuesday I took a spare cd case out of my drivers door pocket.

Rattle gone.

Anyone else experienced something equally stupid 😬

Years and I mean years ago, my mate had a Mini which had this annoying low level rumbling type noise when it went round corners, but not every corner. Go round a right hander and you'd hear it, go round another right hander and no noise, but round a left hander it would appear again. This went on for a while and defied all his efforts to trace it until the day he needed to clean it out. After he'd removed all the crap from the parcel shelf he found it - a marble right at the back, which rolled back and forwards across the car. Sanity regained.

At Uni one of my mates had a stunning girlfriend 🥰 She drove a citroen ami super. Cool. One day he came to see me with her and asked for some advice (he knew I liked cars). Her 🥰 car had developed a nasty rubber burning smell. He had taken it to a garage who had said the clutch and brakes *confused* were fried. £150 fix (back in the day). Anyway. I agreed to have a look ( 🥰)

Crawled underneath, wheels off, drove it.....(gearshift was very notchy and ponderous) but stopped ok. I then opened the bonnet, had a look, closed the bonnet and told her 🥰 and him to leave it with me...

That afternoon she 🥰 came back to see me and find out what I had discovered. I told her it was all fixed *cool* She was so happy *smokin* She asked how much and I said it would cost her a beer only....she gave me a hug and agreed... 🥰 🥰

We dated for a few weeks 🥰 😬....and yes he is still a mate *wink* Oh, the problem?

Well, on the Ami the spare wheel is stored on top of the engine. It had shifted and the tyre was rubbing heavily against the gear linkage (the old out-of-the-dash type like the 2cv). I repositioned it and tightened up the securing nut *rolleyes* 😬

It was a great few weeks though 🥰 😬 *thumbup*

My Sister has a 'terrible knocking noise' from her Mini that her (non-mechanically minded) boyfriend just couldn't identify.

She took me out to demonstrate the noise, which I heard immediately. It was clearly coming from around the top of the B-Pillar where there happened to be an air freshener hanging. I reached over, grabbed the air freshener and asked if the noise had stopped. In an astonished tone she proclaimed the noise had indeed stopped and inquisitively asked as to what I'd done.

I had to smile when I handed over the air freshener, although the real egg-on-the-face was reserved for my Sister's boyfriend! How could he possibly not have figured that out *rolleyes*

I remember about 20 years ago my Gran complaining to me about a rumbling noise her car was making when she went round corners and perhaps she should take it into the garage. She asked me if I could help her identify it. On drive in a local town, she drove through a right hand bend.

"There's the noise!" she shouted.

"Err Gran it could be the rumble strips on the side on road you just hit?"

Bless her. A few years later she was complaining that the car was feeling sluggish too, until I went out with her again and saw she was always pulling away in third. We then figured why her car had gone through three clutches.

I had a 3 door Cossie years ago, and my mate liked it so much, he bought a new one. The night he fetched it he brought it round to show me, and while he had turned his back I wedged a football referee's whistle in the front grille. I forgot about until he brought it round about a month later to see if I could sort out the whistle that gets loauder the faster you drive 😬

I did the repair for free, but wouldn't tell him what it was, but left a 2 inch thick Cossie workshop manual lying around to show it was because I had all the special info.

Some years ago a chum had a late 90's TVR (can't recall model) and noticed that when coming to a stop he heard a distinct splashing noise. Knowing TVR seals to be suspect he took up carpets, spare wheel then door cards but could not find anything wrong. Eventually he noted that one of his screen washers had stopped working, clearly a pipe had come off the nipple and the fluid was....... filling the void that was sealed into the bulk head. 😳

It was a simple case of cutting two 1" holes to allow long nosed pliers to reattach the pipe. *smile* However, as it was a bulk head that had to be cut and the job had to be undertaken by an insurance approved body shop. Cost £600!! *cry*
