Roger Ford
This is the first time I've heard of "Fan Boost" in Formula E. I thought it must refer to some sort of electric fan on the car, but it seems not ... Formula E Anyone think it's a good idea? I suppose it does increase viewer involvement but it still seems like a cack idea. But then doubtless most people think that about the whole Formula E idea. edited for broken linky Edited by - Roger Ford on 7 Jul 2014 17:19:
Jonathan Kay
It sounds weird to me, and I've been trying to think of anything similar in sport. The nearest I can get is audience participation in Roman gladiatorial games. Home advantage is well-documented, but whatever its mechanisms it isn't part of the rules. But the test will be how it works in practice. Jonathan PS: Apparently spectators will be able to join the races in real time using games simulation. Roger King
For goodness sake, just run the whole thing in virtual reality on an "X-Station Play Box" and then no-one will even need to leave their bedroom. Nothing against the concept of electric racing, which could be an interesting technical avenue, but trying to turn a competitor sport into an interactive experience like this smacks of desperate marketing to a section of the population that will never manage to get a girlfriend unless she comes with her own puncture repair kit. andy bell
unfortunately whilst i agree its a way of getting user involvement rapidly and trying to build some team allegiance - the world is all based on personal opinion now via social media 😔
darren f
Quoting That Article: The most controversial feature is the “fan boost”, where the three drivers amassing the most social media votes get a 2.5 second burst that increases the power of their car by 50% and which the drivers call “push to pass”. Seriously *confused*. The day that the purity of competition in motorsport gets 'watered -down' by means of the use of what is effectively a popularity contest will be a sad one. . 'Phone in for your favourite on 09891 .......' and 'lets see what people are saying on twitter':- two aspects of modern life that simply make me despair. 😔

Next, the boss man will announce a series of increasingly barmy ideas, culminating in laying sprinkler hoses along the trackside so as to be able to simulate rain during the race. Oh, wait... darren f
Quoting Jonathan: How is that different from people chatting on BlatChat... during a Grand Prix, or at any other time? Jonathan I see your point but it is different in several ways. Usually anybody contributing to the threads I tend to read on here is likely to reasonably knowledgeable about the subject matter and can add to the discussion, so (for me anyway) it is usually quite informative. Plus there is more likely to be reasoned discussion on a BC thread as opposed to 'opinions' expressed an an 140-character 'sound bite'. Also I assume there is a degree of moderation going on, so the idiots and trolls are weeded out quite quickly (one hopes.... ). Also contrary to what some sections of the public media would seem to think I really have no interest in what Joey Barton, Katie Hopkins or any other Z-List 'celebrity' thinks about any issue in the news. Jonathan Kay
Thanks When I was teaching this stuff I made myself get (pseudonymous) accounts on everything going to see what I was missing. That's worth doing. I agree totally about Twitter and can't find a use for it for myself. But see Violet Elizabeth's comments in a previous discussion.
