Red SLR
Anyone else had a letter? Up £3.50 a month. I know its not a lot of money but its taking the P now. I had the argument with them over F1, after they scammed me out of the F1 by saying I had taken out a new contract and then forced me into Sky Sports with F1. I managed to argue my case and I am still on free F1 until the end of my contract but its starting to get on my man boobs now. Anyone got any suggestions for a different option to watch the F1? And don't say BBC....

darren f
The tactic used to be to phone them up and tell them you want to cancel. They will then sort out a cheaper deal. Or so I've been told by friends that have Sky, it is not from personal experience as I am stubbornly resisting having any Murdoch product in the house (which is becoming increasingly difficult if you like mainstream sports ). Roger Ford
I cancelled mine and had a tense month with no offers from them, but a few days before it was due to be cut off they offered me 50% off the entire package for a year. I'm told if you hold out until it has actually been cut off you're likely to get offered 75% off, but I didn't want to risk the domestic disharmony that might cause. There are some dodgy boxes around which will get you the entire package for £50 a year, but I don't think they can get HD.
Red SLR
That's how I lost the F1. At the end of the first year I rang and said I was going to cancel, they then offered me a discount of a few quid. Then my F1 vanished... Then followed a 3 month argument where they eventually gave in and agreed they had said I would keep my existing channels...
Myles
Thanks - forewarned is.... We are not huge f1 fans and could probably live without it on sky - certainly wouldn't want to stump up for Sports as there is nothing we'd want there.

Myles
Yeah, but can you get Discovery HD on Freesat?
Steve-B
Unfortunately no. You'd be better off on Virgin with a package (B/Band, Phone, TV) due to their having HD for free with Tivo, and far better internet speed.
darren f
Quoting Steve-B: Freesat. Hugely disappointing IMO. A lack of roof-top aerial signal at a new house forced me into buying a Freesat box last week. Yes, Freesat has more more channels but IMO every single one of them are dross. At least Freeview had Quest / Dave / Yesterday, on which there were at least a few vaguely interesting / educational programmes. I am meeting an aerial installer tomorrow to see if we can go to a new roof top aerial and get Freeview back.
Gavin H
I have had the price reduced a couple of times... If you ring them and tell them the overall cost is too high and you plan to leave they will take money off. I was told by them (unofficially of course) to ring on a regular basis to keep knocking the cost down. Obviously you will not get 50% in one go using this method, but we now have free multiroom and discounted rates, for the term of the contract, plus they have not threatened to take away F1. Ed White
There are boxes available on ebay that basically allow you to access every satellite channel out there. Sports, movies, the lot. £50-£70 ish for a box, away you go. Not done it yet, but very tempted. I know quite a few who have, no issues at all. Quite happy to be corrected though. I think the boxes you have seen on e-bay are just clones.
Roger Ford
Apparently not. Look on ebay for Skybox F5S I did look into it, but apart from the obvious illegality, it seems Sky have figured out how to block the HD channels. So if you're happy with SD, and don't mind the (very slim) possibility of Sky's hired goons (aka Her Majesty's Plod) kicking your door down in the middle of the night, that might work. Ed White
It was the illegality that stopped me. That and I try to fill my time doing stuff other than watching tv. However, the boxes must be the most illegal bit?, and they are openly for sale. Surely Sky would go after them. Doubt plod would get involved on a person by person level as how would they know, and would it not be a civil matter?
TobyCoulson
I don't think the boxes are as such illegal but the use of them is

Alan Reeves
Got mine, now for the strength of character to cancel them...well they no longer offer the bits I really want moto gp is head of that list, half the football has gone etc And the increase is a big percentage if not a big individual number
Tony Whitley
I thought this was telling. I badgered my wife (she pays for it) into cancelling some of the stuff we don't watch. The confirmation email saysFrom September your Sky TV prices are changing. Your monthly TV subscription will see an increase of £.00 for your September viewing onwards. It's clearly not in the script that you would ever reduce the cost You'll note how easy it is to add channels and services online but you have to ring up and be badgered relentlessly if you want to remove anything. nickh7
I wont have Sky and one reason is the constant inflation of the service , they have ruined football and sports coverage in general.

Have to disagree about that. I don't know about football but their coverage of other sports is generally unrivalled and very comprehensive imo. Harry Flatters
Got my £3.50 letter this morning and mightily pissed off I was too. However, bear with me because this'll be interesting for F1 viewers... Last year, when I got the increase letter, I was on the max package, including movies and sports. I called to cancel both movies and sport but was told I would also lose F1 as I was changing package unless I kept sports. I was fuming, but to cut a very long story short, they offered me sports for 1/2 price for 6 months, after which I resolved to cancel it anyway and lose F1. Fast forward to today when I got the next increase letter. I went on to the website to just check what I was paying for each component, couldn't reconcile it, so called Sky customer services. Turns out I can't reconcile it because I was on an older package which had different bits. Ultimately, it was correct, £59.25 from September. Almost as an afterthought, I said to the chap that what really ticked me off was having to pay for sports just to get F1. "Oh", he says, "we can sort that", because I am on the 'old' £10.95 HD package, I can cancel the sports package and retain F1. Well that's not what I was told 12 months ago. I was told that because I was cancelling the movies, I was changing my package and thus would lose F1 *mad* . Hence the nonsense above. I said this to the chap and he said I had been misinformed and that provided that I always keep the £10.95 HD package, I could always have F1 for free!! So, aside from the fact that I have paid £11/month for 6 months and £22/mth for 6 months for sports package that I didn't need, I have just reduced my monthly Sky bill by £24.50 (new Sep price). Result 🥰 . However, we will wait and see when sports gets cut off in a months time and see if F1 is still there. Still, I have the chaps name and they will have a tape of the conversation where he has guaranteed me that I will keep F1. Hope this helps a few others.....
