MacP
Interesting article here for wheel and tyre size obsessives on the performance diminishing effect of increasing wheel size: Car and driver article Not perfect, because they didn't keep tyre width constant and they used a grippier compound on the lowest profile tyres. 205/55R16 pulled the same g on the skidpad as 225/45R17 which suggests that sidewall flex isn't a material issue, even on a heavy Golf. It would have been helpful if they'd compared the hard and soft compound on the 17s to isolate the effect of the softer rubber. However, for like for like compounds the effect on grip level of lower profile was minimal (16 to 17) or negative (18 to 19). Reinforces my belief that on a road car the benefits of profiles below 55 are minimal.
Jonathan Kay
Thanks for posting. It's also a pity that they don't give the reproducibility: it isn't possible to tell whether those small changes could be due to chance. Jonathan
BBL
How did you happen to find that article now, as it is from the 2010 May issue of C&D?
