Silverback
Got home from a brief blat tonight to further investigate some gremlins and discovered I am missing one of the coil cover bolt and washers. The other was loose so either the lost one has worked itself away or was absent from when I picked it up. http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y482/mlarbey/A%20new%20R400%20finds%20a%20happy%20home/76716865-6C12-4B0A-86C9-F025F7E88301_zpsylvwkiuw.jpg In any case, can anyone help by letting me know what type of bolt/washer I am looking for and where I can go pick one up (I assume Halfords wouldn't have that type)? This is for an R400D Thanks! Edited by - Silverback on 17 Jun 2014 23:22:
Dr Slotter
Off the top of my head (because I've replaced them recently in similar circumstances) they are M6 x 15mm set bolts. My car originally had torx head but replaced them with hex socket cap heads. You also need fibre washers and a smear of threadlock. I have a supply at work so can't help on sourcing. Edit - changed the bolt length now I've actually looked at my car... Edited by - Dr Slotter on 25 Jun 2014 09:18:

oldbutnotslow
car builder solutions have good stocks of these or eBay (cottage parts) Buy several as they are very prone to coming off.
Silverback
Car builder solutions sounds a good place to start, will just ensure the other is tightened for now while I wait for delivery
Silverback
OK, just bizarre that I do a search for M6 bolts on the car builder site and it goes ahead and suggests I might also be interested in a windscreen washer non return valve. Given I worked out that was exactly my issue with fluid on windscreen tonight, that is just so spooky the website 'knows' what I need?! http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y482/mlarbey/A%20new%20R400%20finds%20a%20happy%20home/50E1FFDE-73E8-4C25-BD82-21BC56FC888C_zpsa75lqsyy.png
John Vine
These bolts are M6 x 16. 25s will be too long. The originals are Torx (T30). I still have one, but the other fell out years ago. One day, I'll get around to replacing the (temporary) hex bolt. Agree with using thread-lock. I use fibre washers above and below the cover as the carbon fibre tends to crack around the hole. (Looking at your pic, though, you don't seem to have the CF version?) While you're poking about, it would be worth taking the cover off and checking the coil-on-plug wiring. You ought (need) to have the flexi-loom with the very bendy and supple silicone-sheathed wires (see here and here). If you still have the old-style wiring, ask S&C to upgrade it, as otherwise you run the risk of fractured wires and severe misfiring (with subsequent damage to the cat). It's also worth checking that you have a big fat grommet where the loom enters the coil cover (see here). Mine came without one, and the loom wires were all but cut through by the sharp edge of the cover within the first 5000 miles. Silverback
JV - thanks, yes found I had M6 x 16 but managed to get some M6 x 20 cap hex stainless from screwfix and used thread lock with fiber washers on the top (will remember on the underneath too next time). Interestingly the cover (regular non CF) was already slightly cracked around the hole on one end so I can see me changing the coil cover to an alternative at some point. Old style loom. I don't have the coil wiring grommet, thanks for the info - will source once (any rough idea of size?) Thanks! John Vine
Re the grommet, mine is approx 30mm OD and 15mm ID, with good wide groove to take the cover. It's not crucial, and you'll have to cut it anyway to get it over the loom. JV
