Ignition Barrel

Ever since having a Caterham carbon dash fitted the bottom of it has been interfering with the key removal. Is it possible to move the ignition barrel round the shaft about 30-40 degrees so that it is in a lower position. It looks like it could be done by undoing the two bolts on the clamp but thought it wise to check first.

Possibly not - there is a peg for the steering lock which sticks into a slot in the column (fixed steering wheel only). Still there for detachable wheels but no slot in the column.

I expect if you moved it down the column where there is no slot it would simply be held out all the time. You'd need to check the key still functioned ok.

Just the two shear off bolts to contend with. I did my mini lock bolts (patiently) with a centre punch and hammer to knock them undone. I slotted the other end of the bolt for subsequent quick removal with a screwdriver (shush don't tell anyone)

I recently removed mine - I don't see it as much of a deterrent, but that's only my opinion - physical removal was simple - just the two bolts you mention, and then there's obviously the wiring.

I already had a starter button so that aspect of the ignition key function was already redundant. I ended up using the the heater fan switch (no longer required in my case) to switch the ignition on and off. I can't remember the details, but it was all fairly straight forward. Given the relatively large diameter of one or two of the wires into the ignition barrel, I did have concerns about current ratings for the switch, but assumed that anything significant is dealt with by relays and no problems so far (three months) ...

And it's one fewer key to lose ...

I removed mine ten years ago. It's a chunk of weight and the actual steering lock part had already been removed as my car was ex-race. It is trivial to hot-wire the car by pulling the wires off the back, so the key was a waste of time.

I did inform the insurer and they were perfectly happy with it given that I had a removable wheel, FIA key and the standard immobiliser.
