The absence of Malinga and Muralitharan makes a huge difference!

Still, Sangakkara and Jayawardene have scored 624 in a single partnership (v South Africa, Colombo, 27 Jul 2006), so if it is a good day for batting, we may have an arduous time in the field.

Completely agree Toby. All his wins came from stifling the opposition run rate and forcing bad shots with tight bowling. Then relying on himself, Trott, Bell or KP to score runs.

I don't necessarily mind that as it wins games, but the bowlers aren't tight any more (and no Swann either) and the current line-up is shaky at best. I can't see the current squad doing anything major until the next proper shake up.

For the record, I loved Vaughan's attacking approach under Fletcher. Vaughan was a proper leader and was able to think on his toes when necessary too.

Edited to remove ham fisted iPad typing....

Quoting eagle:
What do we think for the second innings...? All guns blazing for a quick fire 350? Maybe get A/O for 250 in the process? Might make for an interesting day 5 too!
That requires ingenuity and imagination. See earlier post 😬

Some nervous times yesterday as Cook (well out of form & has been for months), Robson, Bell, Root and Moeen came and went, as if in a revolving door.

Jordan appears to be the natural replacement for Tim Bresnan, every comment I have read says he just appears to belong at international level. Although Ballance got the century, it was Jordan who changed the atmosphere and set things right.

We might get ten wickets (but were very close to defending the position).

Quoting TobyCoulson:
I have to say that Cook as a captain does not inspire me in the slightest. Devoid of any imagination and now he's surrounded himself with yes men I can't see that changing sadly.

It is easy to look good as a captain when you have a great team around you, see Mike Brearley.

Cook is so badly out of form you wonder if he will even recover, particularly given the likely pressure on his captaincy isn't going away any time soon.

Cook's response to the "incident" in the last ODI says it all. Can you imagine how an Australian captain would have responded. Maybe not on the day. But you want those guys to know that one day, somewhere, there is going to be a ball headed for your face.
