Paul McKenzie
Any recommendations for good replacement batteries for 1996 HPC? Same size as original to minimise fiddling-got too many other jobs to do this Winter Thanks
Rob Walker
I think Banner 530 34 Batteries are the only ones that fit, they replaced the Exide starting Bull which is no longer available.
Graham Perry
What a few people have done including myself to find a small light battery is to visit a repair workshop that specialises in Garden tractors. Mosts of these sell batteries of a comparable size to a Caterham one and are usually quite cheap. The output is usually slightly lower the the original Caterham one but mine has been fine for the last three years.
excess baggage
Forget the above if you have a real car (1700 crossflow) The idea that a lawnmower battery would start one of these is just ludicrous.
Swiss_Tony
The battery I use on my HPC is a Bosch battery I think it is originally intended for a Reliant Robin (dont laugh). If you need a part number let me know and I will have a look. All that was needed to fit was a few small mods to battery tray. James
Casbar
I got my replacement battery from James Whiting. Fitted straight in, and came fully charged.
Mike Bees
EB - Graham's car sports an all-steel 1700 xflow (possibly the best sounding one I've ever heard). It revs to well over 9000rpm. That real enough for you? smile.gif Mike
I reply to every thread
I bought an exide Starting Bull from Caterham (for my 94HPC) about two weeks ago. Cost about £50.00. It would appear that they are still available
Aidan Parte
I also need a new battery for my short-cockpit crossflow car. I don't know where they are on Vauxhalls but mine is under the steering column and looks tricky to extract. Any (helpful) hints? Part numbers for easily obtainable (e.g. Halfords, Les Smith, Bosch, etc.) batteries would be very appreciated.
Simos
Aidan, what fun you have ahead of you. Check first that you have a Y shaped cross member betwixt the batter tray andengine. If not then you can jack the car up and squeeze the battery out from beneath (not familiar with short cockpits). If you've got then I'm afraid you'll need to split your steering column (just in front of the dash bulkhead) take out the bottom section from the rack to the bulk head (straight forward but don't mix up the halves of the clamp as they're drilled as a pair). Undo the rearmost webber or take em off if you prefer and then you should (just) be able to squeeze the battery out minding the brake line as you go... There's a complete set of instructions in the caterham manual next you talk to james Whiting who sells a small rack and clamps that re-locates the battery above your bell-housing so you don't have to bugger about in such a rediculous way in future (twice for me, what's the adage...? once bitten twice stupid...) Oh, also get a battery isolator switch which stops the battery getting discharged and dying in the first place. Cheers, Simon.
