Guest
Building an R500... Started yesterday. Steering rack in OK. Lower Wishbone front bolt into chassis gets really really tight when I finger tighten it with or without wishbone in place. Caterham sent me new bolt(s), but still just as tight on both sides - Derek at Caterham recommends we tap the thread? Surely this isn't normal??? Martin J
Any powder coating run inside the hole & onto the threads? This can cause things to tighten up. If you have run in a few turns by hand I think we can be confident you are not cross threaded. Liberally apply copper grease. Looking forward to reading your blog. *thumbup*
Guest
Nah pretty sure I can't see anything in there... The bolt goes in by finger turning it around 1 full turn, max - I just air on the side of caution on these sort of things, especially as it's in the chassis... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5ZfjncpcPrg/UvJbgbjf6WI/AAAAAAAAAPs/qo0BrYFKwEE/s1600/photo.JPG Edited by - Roadracer1977 on 5 Feb 2014 15:42:

Rob Walker
As Caterham said run a tap down to clear the thread no big problem.
TomB
ISTR you can make a DIY tap by getting a bolt the correct size and thread and cutting with a hacksaw blade or dremel a couple of strips perpendicular through the thread. This makes an edge to the male thread on the bolt helping clean the female thread on nut/ boss.

elie boone
Do the decent thing and use a proper tap.
Martin J
Just reading your blog, was the bolt the wrong one ie wrong thread pitch? You might want to mask up your pristine new paintwork to protect it from any accidental contacts near the wishbone holes etc.

Yes have masked up with card and tape, but cheers anyway.
