CaterBram Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 As part of my "Budget" zetec conversion i've picked up a Retroford Zetec wet sump to replace the standard cast zetec sump. Much Much lighter than the cast but does anyone know what the oil fill level should be. I know the Raceline unit is 5 litres, but don't know what the raceline one actually will be.
Klunk Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Don't know the exact amount as mine came with a modified dip stick. 4.5 litres rings a bell but probably best to ring Dave Colledge a RetroFord. Regards, Giles
CaterBram Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Hi Giles, Mine's come with a modified dip stick and tube, just wanted a sanity check for when I fit it in the morning. Managed to crack the original sump last sunday on a ratchet strap dumpped in the middle of the road that i didn't see. ☹️ emailed both Raceline & Retroford asking about sumps, Not heard anything from Raceline but Retroford called 9am on Monday morning, seems a top chap. Will try the 4.5 litre and see where it sit's on the new dipstick.
Klunk Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Have you got the flat bottomed one with the two spreader bars which the bolts pass through? If you have be aware that you need to drill/tap the bolts on the end. From memory, you will also have to remove the windage plate. I have to confess my RetroFord sump is on my Westy; I have a Scholar sump on the Caterham as it has slightly better ground clearance. That said, I have never had any problems with the RetroFord unit (10,000miles) and, as well as being lighter, it has the added advantage that if you hole it, you can just weld/braze it up . Regards, Giles
CaterBram Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Cheer's Giles, Yup that's the one i've got, i'll let you know how I get on.
Klunk Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Another quick tip: - Make sure you use a thin bead of sealant both sides of the rubber strip as a "belt and braces" measure. Regards, Giles
CaterBram Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Well got the old sump off, not a crack but a large hole in the sump floor. got the new sump fitted & engine run up fine. Not 100% sure it's sealed yet as theres that much oil sprayed over the engine bay and engine it will take a while to drain off. Must be trying to be a X/Flow again 😬
Klunk Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 That's the rustproofing sorted for another year then 😬. Glad it all went well. Regards, Giles
