Catkins Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Just trying to warm the car up (K series) and check everything prior to the dreaded MOT tomorrow it seemed that the jubilee clip on the large diameter hose running into the engine block (apologies for lack of technical knowledge) had loosened over the winter and the hose appeared to pop off dumping what I assume is all the coolant everywhere. I have re-attached the hose and adjusted and tightened the jubilee clip and now must re-fill the coolant. Searching through the forum the ''Peter Carmichael'' method seems widely praised but I wanted to ask a couple of things. First do you think this event would have totally drained all the coolant from all areas leading to a full refill. Secondly can I ask a couple of very basic questions. Is the expansion tank referred to, the tank that you normally top up with coolant? And would anyone be able to point me to a photograph of the ''water rail'' and ''radiator bleed valve'' to help identify these items? Thank you for your help and many apologies for my lack of basic knowledge!
Dignity Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Hi Catkins, Halfords had Comma xtream coolant in stock when I was in the Basildon branch on Saturday. Its probably not cheaper than caterham parts but if you need some quickly? Good luck Dignity
Mike Scott Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Hi Catkins, Whoops, if the engine was running when the hose came off you may well have lost most of the coolant as the engine water pump would have pumped it out. The Alcester 7’s site is good for basic info, the water rail is shown here the radiator bled valve is the nut mounted on the top (header tank) of the radiator, and the expansion tank is indeed the semi transparent plastic tank where you normally top up the coolant. Good luck with the MOT. Cheers Mike
Catkins Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Hello Dignity , thank you for the tip regarding the coolant I will try Halfords tomorrow. I hope all is well with you! Mike thank you very much for the link and the clarification on the elements that is very much appreciated .
Catkins Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Dignity, I forgot to ask which Comma Xstream coolant did you go with as there seemed to be a couple on the website?
Dignity Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Catkins, I did not buy any I just noticed it on the shelf but one is red coolant the other is blue if I remember correctly. Not sure which way round Dignity
