Dignity Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Hi All, Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. It's a 1.8k with jenveys and emerald ecu. I took her out on Sunday and I noticed right off that she was ticking over poorly. It started miss firing and got progressively worse as the engine warmed up. I have just been out again and same thing. When it gets hot its almost undriveable in traffic but is okay when I give it some beans. Lots of black soot on plugs and coming out of exhaust. I have only done 60 miles and have nearly used a tank full of petrol. I have checked the numpty things like plugs and dizzy (eu2). Took the air box off and no luck? I know its not a lot to go on but if anyone can give me the answer I am offering a 1 pint reward Regards Dignity
Stationary M25 Traveller Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Sounds like the ECU is telling it to overfuel !
Sheds Moderator Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 It could be a number of things. It's got an emerald, it's clearly overfuelling, why is anyone's guess at present. Could be a dud sensor, bad connection, or internal Emerald related fault. Usually these things are a dud sensor or similar, you say you have done the numpty things, have you made and unmade all the sensor connections?
Dignity Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 Hi Chaps, I havn't made and unmade all of the connections but did check that everything was still connected inbetween looking at the engine and scratching my chin Dignity
oilyhands Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Check the TB balance, sometimes the balance bar clip can dislodge and mess things up badly. otherwise just connect the ECU up to your PC and see waht the sensors are returning to the ECU. Oily
Dignity Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 Thanks Oily, I will try but not too sure what to look for. I will have a tinker after work tomorrow. Regards Dignity
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted March 2, 2011 Area Representative Posted March 2, 2011 I'm with John Hughes. My moneys on a busted fuel regulator.
Dignity Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 Hi Paul/John, What is it? what do I look for? and how much does one cost 😬? regards Dignity Edited to say I just googled it. Is it the one on top of the fuel rail? How do I tell if it's cream crackered? My one doesnt have a pipe connected is that normal? Don't forget chaps there is a pint riding on this 😬 Edited by - Dignity on 2 Mar 2011 18:34:11
Mark Durrant Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 It could be the Throttle Position Sensor however, before running off to replace numerous parts follow Oily's recommendation and check the TB's are balanced. If this is not the cause then hook up the laptop.
colindavies56 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 if its the first run of the year,it might be flat fuel, smell it,if it smells like vinigar, dump it,if it smells sharp like a spirit its ok,quick+easy test and its free. good luck.
Dignity Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 *arrowup*Mark All 4 plenums were opening at the same time when I was revving does that imply that they are balanced? Regards Dignumpty
Dignity Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 Thanks Colin but fresh fuel. Tesco Finest 99 octane
Mark Durrant Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Dignity You need to check the airflow at idle with something like this. If you do not have one a local member may be able to assist.
Johnty Lyons Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 IMHO shes overfuelling Copes ok when very cold but crap when hot Suspect temp sensor misleading ECU Get it on laptop soonest No point in guessing Big benefit of an Emerald you can find out what is happening
Mr Locust Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Once the laptop is connected, also worth a check of the lambda sensor (if fitted and enabled in closed loop mode).
Dignity Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Hi All, Well I just pugged ecu into laptop and I am not really sure what I am looking at so I went to the live adjustments screen. Lots of numbers and acronyms that I did not understand but the two that stayed at zero were the MAP sensor (0.00bar) and the IAC position. The lambda was reading 15.6 with a target of 12.5. I didnt run It up to full temperature. Anyone help?????????????? Regards Dignumpty
Ray Pearce Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 My guess would be the throttle pot sensor telling the ECU that you are at wide open throttle. Plug yer laptop in like Johnty says and check what the throttle pot is sending.
Mark Durrant Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I am not familiar with Emerald but I would check to see what throttle site you are at tickover and that as you depress the accelerator it should increase to 15 (well that is the value for an MBE). I would also check that the temperature sensor increases as the engine warms up, if not the ECU will be providing fuel for a cold engine so it will be running rich.
Dignity Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Hi Mark, The coolant temp was rising as you would expect. but not sure where to look for throttle site? It has a speed site and a load site they were reading 2 or 3 at 1500/1600rpm Dignity
Mark Durrant Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Dignity I am busy at present but recommend take a look at the Emerald Manual
Mark Durrant Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Quoting Mark Durrant: Dignity I am busy at present but recommend take a look at the Emerald Manual Look at Live adjustments
Ray Pearce Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 In Live Adjustments the Load Site is the throttle position. Should go from 0 to 15 when you press the throttle. It might be worthwhile recalibrating the throttle pot - Setup/Throttle Pot and then follow the instructions.
Dignity Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Thanks Guys, I have come in for a sulk now 😔 but I'll take a look at the manual tonight *mad* Dignity
Mr Locust Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 The lambda was reading 15.6 with a target of 12.5 Higher than 14.7=lean, lower than 14.7=rich. If the closed loop operation is enabled, a live reading of 15.6 with a target of 12.5 would mean that the ECU adds the maximum additional fuel to try and achieve 12.5. Is closed loop enabled? How to enable and disable depends on the type of Emerald controller.
