GPBox Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 First the (possibly) stupid quesiton: I have a 2001 1.6 K Series SS, will my car have points in the Distributor ?........ depending on the answer, is there a good upgrade to replace them ?......... The car is running fine, but always looking for something new (I already have a Emerald u/g from DVA.....) cheers Graham Edited by - gpbox on 25 Feb 2011 10:34:07
oilyhands Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 There are no points in the distributor as it is not a full distributor in as much as it does not determine the firing point, nor trigger it, nor operate the advance, it is a simple HT distribution system which merely routes the spark to the correct plug. The timing and triggering of the spark is done by the ECU using speed/positional information from the crank sensor and load information from the MAP or TPS sensors. Oily
GPBox Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 Thanks Dave guess I need to look elsewere to spend more ££ btw ....since your handywork, its a transformed car cheers Graham
myothercarsa2cv Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Have you removed the front engine mount? That's a good free upgrade (if you make the blanking plate yourself, or £15 or something from CC)
GPBox Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 oh yes, Dave #2, undertook said tricky task during Dave #'1 upgrade 😬
myothercarsa2cv Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Well... You'll just have to buy carbon fibre then! Or Arnie's rose joints ( 🥰)
Johnty Lyons Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Just take the distributor off and throw it away that always IMHO makes a good upgrade 😬
GPBox Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 Got Carbon bug already ...... Johnty, I'll think about that one for a while first Anyone going to Donington on the 5th March Track day ?
CageyH Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Fit an Emerald, and go wasted spark. Less moving (wearing) parts has to be a good thing in my book
Sheds Moderator Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Aye, but has anyone succeeded in wearing out a K series? Even Angus and Tessa only managed to get theirs "a little bit down on power, I think it's past its best" after the best part of 100k miles!
Slipper man Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 I have a different issue. I have an engine that has been built from parts I had spare, but when I come to fit the ancillaries, I realise that the distributor drive is from a shaft that is driven from the inlet camshaft. I need to attach the distributor to the new engine but can't see how to remove the shaft from the camshaft of the old engine and install it on the new one. Is it just an interference fit? Do you just use a pulled to get it off? How do you install it on the new engine (and no, I don't want to go to the effort of changing to the later ignition system !)
Johnty Lyons Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 You won't get it out without destroying it and seriously using an MGF coil pack going without a distributor is wee buns.
oilyhands Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Either swap the cams over from one engine to the other, or cut the end off the cam that has the spigot (cut just inside the thrust ring), then cut longitudinally down the ring of cam surrounding the spigot, you can then easily split the cam ring from the spigot and oull it out for re-use, I've done it a hundred or more times. There is information on ym K series website on the correct rotational position of the spigot. Oily
oilyhands Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Spigots are in short supply, I bought the last 20 available some time ago. and they were £27 each, I have 4 left. If you find a supply please let me know. Harvesting from old cams is a cost effective method. Oily
