David Lynch Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 One of those 🙆🏻y jobs Anyone know the Threads per inch on the cut down bolt under the FIA bar or Rollcage ? I don't have one to hand but quick search implies it's 19 if standard BSP ? Bolt is 3/8" x 3/4 long. I need to buy the right tap set to clean up a cage that currently has remains of an old snapped one embedded ☹️ Most Taps on sale are 20TPI, go figure Ta, David
CaterBram Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 If your sure it's 19 TPI would have thought it more likely to be 3/8" x 20 TPI bsf
Area Representative Richard Price Posted February 18, 2011 Area Representative Posted February 18, 2011 David, Mine are 24tpi, which is 3/8 UNF (I've just been into the garage and checked)
CaterBram Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 😳 Dave Looks like your either need a new tape measure or new thread gauges 😬
David Lynch Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 Ah, moment of clarity (after half a bottle of Tempranillo). Count the threads on the great big sodding photo I've posted, divide by three and multiply by four. 25.333 close enough for Jazz - Richard wins the prize for identifying UNF 😬
Wrightpayne Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Dave, bolt is different between full cage and FIA bar. Cage tap is 1/2" unf 20 tpi. Ian
David Lynch Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 79085FIA is the part number on CC site. Same 3/8x3/4" setscrew in the fastener packs for recent pre-metric cages SFH1/2x1 for 'Vauxhall' roll bar at ½x1" looks like only alternative as suggested by Wrightpayne and that looks like BSP My guess without having it here is 3/8 and UNF. I suspect it's same as what's under my FIA bar (6 years and a lost receipt ago) I'll drill the damn thing out as close as I dare and pull last bits with a scribe
Wrightpayne Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 David, IIRC my FIA bar had 2 or 3 bolts each side on the topside so the over shock bolt probably not necessary. My cage is a safety devices. Ian
David Lynch Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Thanks DWM, you have email. Wrightpayne, cages are vey different as no fillet plate and a scrutineer can easily check if they're missing (if doesn't mind getting dirty). They also will look for top harness bolts to protrude right through the chassis rail. You have all being warned. That was from Shenstone and District guys.
Sheds Moderator Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 My 95 cage was 3/8 UNF, I know very well as I spent Gawd knows how long drilling it out. ☹️ I suspect a FIA bar of similar vintage is the same.
Wrightpayne Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 David, I wasn't suggesting for a moment you should omit the bolt on a cage as there is no mounting plate at this point. It wasn't clear whether you were fixing a cage or bar. I take it now that you're fixing a cage. I'm near mallory / cat mids if you need to borrow my 1/2 tap. Ian
k.russell Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 My roadsport cage (for sale) has different size, larger than the ones in my Caged slr cage
David Lynch Posted February 20, 2011 Author Posted February 20, 2011 Thanks for the offer Ian We'll see if I get the thing out cleanly. That'll dictate whether it stays at 3/8". I think there quite few flavours of Cage and FIA bar out there. I notice the later Metric chassis uses normal fittings.
