alan c Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 I am trying to change the pulleys that drive the alternator from a normal V belt to a mutli groove belt. To do so I need to replace the pulley on the end of the crankshaft and I cannot get it to line up. I have tried on a spare engine I have on the bench and it won't line up on that either, am I missing the point? I know that the bolts are not uniform but I have tried in all six possible locations, the standard pulleys appear to be interchangeable between the two enginbes but I cannot get the SDB one to fit and I know it has been on another VX already so I reckon I must be doing something wrong. Alan
ECR Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Nothing special in fitting these IIRC. If you have tried all possible positions and you are sure it doesn't line up then you must have a faulty component. You already know that it will only fit in one position .... clean up the locations so that you can move it easily and have another go. Good luck
alan c Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 I will have another go later but its all fairly clean and I have tried on the engine in the car where I expected it to be a little difficult to line up and on a spare where I can see easily. Fairly sure this has been on another engine so suspect I may well be at fault but I get the standard pulleys to go on easily. Alan
Paul Deslandes Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I doubt its possible to get it wrong but have you got the pulley the right way around, i.e. the right face to the crank? It definitely fitted mine okay! There's probably a witness mark on the crank side so should be easy enough to check. There could be traces of loctite in the pulley bolt holes that might be making it difficult to get the bolts in and needs to be chipped out. I hope you get it sorted Paul
alan c Posted August 9, 2010 Author Posted August 9, 2010 Paul I plan to have another go this evening and will make sure all the bolt holes are clean but they already appear OK. It is almost certainly me being a numpty, I had figured it would take a few attempts to get it lined up. I even got it marked with a pen so I can keep track as I rotate to try different locations. Look out for an update later this evening. Regards Alan
alan c Posted August 9, 2010 Author Posted August 9, 2010 Paul OK as I suspected I was being a numpty, I gave the bolt holes a clean and removed some old locctite and it it now fits. It was only a very small trace in a few bolts holes but that was all that was required to make it impossible to fit. So now it goes on the spare engine I will fit for real tomorrow night on the engine in the car, that will be a little harder as I cannot actually see the holes to line them up! Which loctite do you recomend I use on these bolts? Alan
Paul Deslandes Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I use 243 for most things and nothing's fallen off yet! You could try making a 'rubbing' of the pulley on the car with a piece of paper and a smear of grease on the crank pulley face. Then you'll have a mirror image of how the crank holes are lined up. Worth a try. Best of luck Paul
alan c Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Paul Thanks I have 243 so I will use that. I will try the rubing idea and see how I get on. Alan
