myothercarsa2cv Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 In my bid for that extra bit of security (and perhaps sprint compliance ). Any advice on how much higher I need to go? The bar is in line with the top of my head, pretty much. Mucho thanks to the POBC in advance John _________________________ myothercarsa2cv Bugsy: '82 2cv6 😬 Talloulah '08 1.6K Classic Edited by - myothercarsa2cv on 2 Sep 2010 21:28:48 Edited by - myothercarsa2cv on 2 Sep 2010 21:29:09 Edited by - myothercarsa2cv on 10 Sep 2010 15:33:00
CaterBram Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 There should be 50mm clearance between the top of the Roll Bar and the top of your helmet. Q469 WET, 1990 1690 Xflow Long Cockpit in Ali except for the red bits. .CaterBram on Facebook
bstark Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Or... if you like your hood (if you've got one) and boot cover to still fit then you could go lower floor - works really well for me Bob Stark Supersprinter
myothercarsa2cv Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 No low floor due to ground clearance unfortunately Live down a dirt track... . So 50mm plus 25mm for a helmet = 3" taller? 4" for good measure? John _________________________ myothercarsa2cv Bugsy: '82 2cv6 😬 Talloulah '08 1.6K Classic
Z3MCJez Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Put a helmet on, and then measure the vertical height from the cross strut (that the seat-belts affix to) to the top of your helmet. Give Caged this dimension and they'll make the right sized roll-bar or roll-cage. I'm not sure that 50mm is the right dimension for a bar - it is for a cage, but as your safe line is to the nose cone it will angle downwards. Jez

Drumster Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 John, There was a very good article on this in LF sometime this year. Probably worth flicking through your back copies...... Chris Alston C7CAT 1800 Supersprint R248 ....and then I jumped in
CaterBram Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 A Tall FIA bar can be used with a Soft Bit's for Seven's half hood. The boot cover still fit's with a Tall FIA Bar. The information I was given when I started sprinting at the start of this year was 50mm from the top of the FIA Bar to the top of the Helmet and the Helmet was not to pass over a line drawn from the top of the Roll Bar, to the front roll bar which is built into the top of the dash board. The Tall FIA Bar does not just go higher but also continues forward so that it's actually slightly above you rather than behind, just need to be careful when getting in and out. 😬 With a cage you require 50mm clearance from the top of the Helmet to the underside of the cage & any part of the FIA Bar or Cage can come into contact should be fitted with suitable protective padding. To get clearance on mine i'm on a Tall FIA Bar and bench seats, with Tillets and a standard FIA bar the top of my helmet was above the roll bar. michaeljclark Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Sorry for a slight Hijack of the thread How much taller is the the tall FIA bar from the normal one fitted to an SV? I was just about to order a SBFS half hood when it dawned on me to make sure that my head wasn't going to get in the way and leave the hood with a "bump" in it. I've already got lowered floors and need about an extra 1/2 inch . I could take the seat out and sit on the floor or make a custom seat, but thought I'd ask - I can't see a tall FIA bar on the CC website. Cheers Mike 07 Plated RoadSport SV 150 in Red with Black nose band and stripe
dalongbloke Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Gentlemen.. soft bits make a SPECIFIC half hood for the tall FIA bar.. which I have. The height makes a standard half hood flap at speed, so the tall version has fibre glass stiffeners along the edges to prevent the problem. Check out Hal... http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/dalongbloke
martin b Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 My car has lowered floors and a tall FIA bar and at 6'3" I am safely within the limit for sprinting, the line is drawn from the top of the bar to the top of the engine, 2 relatively immovable objects mind you my wife at 5'3" struggles to see over the scuttle 😳 I am often shocked on blats how many owners have their heads protruding above their roll bars 🙅🏻♂️ The tall bar is 50mm taller than the standard bar, a 1/2 hood is available for this from SB47S but you will need reinforcing strips to stop it flapping at speed. Tall bars are, I think, still available from Arch as this is not a current CC product, will be with the single diagonal bar. Caged may also make a taller bar though I haven't seen one. Not sure about tall bars on SVs ? I would hesitate ordering an even taller bar, I would concentrate my efforts at ensuring the seats are low and reclined sufficiently rearwards. A lowered floor should not be discounted though, welcome to have sit in mine if it helps Martin
michaeljclark Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Cheers Martin, looks like tbe seat base is coming out then and a half inch of foam going in. I've already got the lowered floors in and seats as far back as possible, but at 6ft 6ins, it was always going to be a squeeze.... 😬 Mike 07 Plated RoadSport SV 150 in Red with Black nose band and stripe

I think the 50mm is from the top of the helmet to the top of the roll bar - I.e. the bit it would rest on if you were upsidedown. Padding part is right ... Jez
myothercarsa2cv Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Thanks all for the sound advice. Should have mentioned its a metric chassis, so Caged have said they'd make me one Jez - good suggestion re sitting in the car and measuring, will do that when I get a chance. Thanks for the offer Martin, I sat in Jam3s' 7 and I have to say it was rather comfy, though I don't think I can go for the lowered floors as I already scrape various bits and bobs getting in and out of my drive I'll have to get the ruler out John _________________________ myothercarsa2cv Bugsy: '82 2cv6 😬 Talloulah '08 1.6K Classic
James_Russell Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Sorry to mention this in a 'safety' topic, but have you considered what the tall bar will look like? If a 'tall' FIA bar (which already looks a little out of proportion on the car) is 2" taller, what is a 4" taller bar going to look like? 😳 I have a tall cage on my car and that looks dramatically different from standard, even though its only 2" taller. If the safety is your only consideration, I have seen seven-type cars and single seaters which have had an additional 'U' shaped bar welded onto the top of the existing bar to provide the additional clearance. This would be cheaper, too. Only problem is making the hood fit Q41 ACF Classic Grad #98
myothercarsa2cv Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Fair point, I'd rather keep my bonce intact though Not worried about the hood, I never use it anyway! As per Mr "Cam in the Sump" Alston's suggestion, I've dug out the article (Feb 2010) on bars - the tall bar looks fine - I reckon another inch on top of that would be no issue on the aesthetics front John _________________________ myothercarsa2cv Bugsy: '82 2cv6 😬 Talloulah '08 1.6K Classic

myothercarsa2cv Posted August 12, 2010 Author Posted August 12, 2010 Measured up last night, 17" from the cross bar to top of helmet plus 2.5". That's 4" higher than standard, more than enough methinks Can't wait...
