captsleepy Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Hi All I have just re fitted the engine 1700 x/flow, the red charge light now lights up when the ignition is off and goes out when the ignition is turned on and stays out when the engine is running. I suspect I have reconnected the alternator incorrectly. Does anyone have any info on connecting a Motorola 9RC alternator?
Area Representative Crudders Posted August 4, 2010 Area Representative Posted August 4, 2010 Hi Captsleepy, I'm not familiar with the Motorola 9RC alternator type but in general terms: The charge lamp (or ignition warning light) is connected to the alternator via a brown and yellow wire and to a switched live green wire that loops across the back of the instruments. The lamp acts like a pair of scales, so remains unlit with 0 volts both sides (ignition off/engine stationary) or with equal voltage both sides (ignition on/engine running/alternator charging adequately) but lights with a potential difference (ignition on/engine stationary) or (ignition on/engine running but alternator output inadequate) and, albeit briefly, when you switch off (ignition off/engine and alternator still turning). The reversed behaviour of your charge light suggests that the brown and yellow wire has a permanent 12V connection which is equalised by the green wire when the ignition circuit is switched on. Have you connected the brown and yellow wire to a terminal on the alternator marked B+? It should be connected to a terminal marked 'IND'. On the 'machine sensing' Lucas ACR in my 7 the terminals on the alternator are arranged in a row of three with two large spade terminals that connect to thick brown wires in the loom (connected together and interchangeable) which ultimately end up at the live (+) battery terminal. Next to these is a slightly smaller spade terminal which connects to the brown and yellow 'IND' wire. There is a fourth alternator wire in the loom (black and brown) which is only required for 'battery sensing' alternators and in my car this is taped up and isolated, but may well be required on your alternator model. If so, is it possible that you have the brown/yellow and brown/black connections reversed? If the above doesn't help, could you post back with more detailed description of your alternator terminals, adjacent markings and cable colours? HTH, Crudders
captsleepy Posted August 5, 2010 Author Posted August 5, 2010 Thanks Crudders Problem solved works a treat now. Sleepy
