GraemeP Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Hi all I purchased a windscreen and stanchions earlier this year and currently have aero with a battery cut off switch. We took the aero screen off at the weekend to line up the windscreen to see where it sits so we could fit our shiftlights, and when we removed the aero it seems that there must be "captive" nuts as nothing fell off on the inside when I held the nuts and undid the aeroscreen. It appears that all we have missing is the passenger side second fixing for the windscreen, as the 2 holes for the battery master are aligned with the stanchion. Can anyone advise what I need to check to see if the fittings are substantial enough to take the screen (or does there need to be something beefed up inside the car for the screen), and also how we go about making the second hole on the passenger side? Appreciate any assistance! Rgds Graeme
Neil_K Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Best bet is to take off the knee panels and see what you have behind. The nuts don't have far to drop, so you may not have heard them anyway even if they were not captive. You'll only need to remve them once to find out what you have behind, and fingers crossed they'll be nuts rather than rivets holding the knee panel on. As for beefing up, the standard or captive nuts should both be fine. If you have captive nuts, the second nut will already be behind where you intend to drill, so you will have to remove this anyway before you can make the hole - and remove the knee panel to do this. So either way you look at it, knee panels have to come off. Then, see what's inside and do a new hole carefully once masked up. Start with a small drill bit in the centre and get larger until you have the right size ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calm down dear, it's only a forum!
dalongbloke Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Does not need to be anything inside the scuttle for the screen except a "penny" washer to spread the load a little. Your car may have been fitted already with captive nuts, which are an option from Caterham. You will also need to think about where to site mirrors unless you are planning on using the wobbly ones on the doors. See my pics below for a few options. GraemeP Posted August 4, 2010 Author Posted August 4, 2010 Nice one gents - excuse my ignorance but I assume the "knee" panels are the bits of trim that stop you being able to see the inside of the 2 screen bolts that would be furthest towards the rear of the car? I am guessing it can't be much else! Thanks, I will take them off tonight - I have a horrible feeling that they are attached with rivets so will be out with the drill.
Roadsport06 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 That's it. Just drill out the rivets. BRG and Yellow nose now with added brooklands
