Roadsport06 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I booked a trackday at Bedford and assumed that I'd be OK on the noise front (Standard exhaust,11k miles 1.8k series). I've only now done a search to see people struggle with the Static test 101dB Drive-by 87.5dB. As a precaution, has anyone used one of these here? If so what size do I need? And finally, does it fit inside the exhaust exit or over? Many thanks BRG and Yellow nose now with added brooklands
Tony Whitley Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Static test 101dB is pretty LOUD surely? Some people have trouble with Goodwood at 98 but standard usually pass AFAIK. Mine is down around 96, that's with a Raceco silencer but I don't think it makes that much difference. Edited by - Tony Whitley on 3 Aug 2010 08:55:38
Roadsport06 Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 I think that 101 dB will be fine for the static, but I read that if you trigger a sensor on drive by you are out for the day. No warnings, which is a shame, otherwise you can lift off if you need to. If you don't get a warning then you don't know if you need to lift off. Wondering what people get with the standard exhaust with a plenum intake k series on a drive by. BRG and Yellow nose now with added brooklands
Rattie Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I've only seen a R500-K fail the drive by at Bedford and that was pretty loud. With a more middle of the road setup I can't see you tripping anything unless the silencer has blown all of it's wool out the back. Does it sound overly loud/make your passenger's ears bleed? Roadsport06 Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 That sounds positive Martyn, I don't think it is overly loud for a seven, quiet compared to x-flows BRG and Yellow nose now with added brooklands
chrisd Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Hi - if you're really worried, give Bedford a call - they'll let you take the car over for a test before the trackday - I'm not sure how far away you are. I've done this a couple of times and they've been really helpful. They'll test it static and then one of the instructors will take it on the track and give it some revs near one of the sensors. You should be OK in a K-series - just don't end up in a conga-line with other 'loud' cars. I failed the static test at Castle Combe a few years ago, so tried one of those Merlin mufflers - but it actually made the reading higher
Archie Procter Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 As you could take it down in advance but to be fair I suspect a std 1.8 with a cat exhaust should be fine. There's lots in the archives about Bedford noise and it is strict but standard Ks should be ok, I have driven racecars around there no problem. Supertrapps are very much a last resort and involve drilling through the exhaust to stay on, plus they restrict the engine so my advice would be don't even think about it.
Ian_Brandon Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 I may have been that R500! We went there in May whilst running the engine in and sailed through the static test at about 95dB. There are however 4 drive by devices on the infield (mostly at the buildings end where you come on) and despite them telling us we'd get a noise board first, we got a black flag. On our day apparently the wind was blowing straight into one of these that was close to the track and bingo. I did a few adjustments and they re-checked us at 6000 static and we still made 97dB (Powerspeed exhaust). Resumed on a promise to keep to 6500 and short shift. Not a problem because we were running in, but I probably won't go back. Somebody made thye very good point that they used to fly Vulcans from there and if you want to feel the earth move......
