The Pikey Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Just in the throws of fitting Arrow con rods and Omega pistons to a 2.0 Duratec and wondering if theres anything I should be using to lube the big ends other than engine oil? Also, is there a right and wrong way to fit the rods? Other than the name etching they look the same both sides but I thought I better check first. thanks jason
6speedmanual Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Graphogen on the gudgeon pin assembly. Mix of engine oil and 25% STP Oil Treatment in your oil can to put on the rings when fitting pistons - it really stays in place until the engine is ready to start (which is sometimes weeks later in a vehicle build sequence). Smear of Graphogen on big ends and in fact all the white metal bearings. Graphogen the cam lobes and followers and pour a sticky syrup of oil/STP over the cam before hiding it away under the cam covers. Prime oil galleries before starting. No dry start. All the Graphogen comes out on first oil change. Peter BRAWNGP green SUPERLIGHT FCITW 2009 😬
The Pikey Posted August 2, 2010 Author Posted August 2, 2010 thanks Peter, I'll drop in a Halfords and see if they have either. Jason
Paul Deslandes Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 its as well to make sure that the backs of the bearing shells and where they seat in the rods/caps are clean and dry so that there's no film of oil in there that might make the bearings tight. Same goes for the mains. I've always given a smear of oil on the backs of the shells in the past but earlier this year had a major problem with a tight bearing failing soon after rebuild and the only cause we could come up with was that the oil film behind the shell might have made the bearing too tight initially, not allowing oil to get into the bearing space at hot idle pressures. Second time around I checked all the bearing clearances with plastigauge to make sure. I'd be interested to know the pro engine builders' views on this.
Racing Snake Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Jason give Simon Armstrong a call tomorrow and ask him Mad Hatter Racing - Feel The Duralight R Torque 😬 Carl @ Penn 7's Caution - May Contain Nuts !
6speedmanual Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Not sure Halfords will have Graphogen but you can uy it from Burton Power. Also other local engine machinists and builders are likely to have supplies of it for use in their build shops - would probably sell you a tube. Peter BRAWNGP green SUPERLIGHT FCITW 2009 😬
The Pikey Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 Carl I'm off to see him on Thursday to pick the head up so I'll pick his brains then. Peter you are right, Graphogen is not a product stocked by Halfords but I did pick a bottle of that Oil Treatment stuff from there this afternoon. Bought the Graphogen on EBay and I'll have it tomorrow, bloody dear stuff! thanks Jason
