StuC Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Hi everyone Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere... I'm a newbie (1st post!). I'm trying to find out what sort of steering wheel boss adaptor I need to fit the splines on the steering column of my 1996 Supersport 1600. I'm trying to get hold of a boss adaptor that will allow me to fit my 6-hole Momo steering wheel. The reason (perhaps a little silly) is that I love this wheel, it's the right diameter, and it has great emotional value, having been on a previous car (not a Seven) which is now "in the great scrapyard in the sky", following an unfortunate incident! My car's steering column shaft is a 3/4" outside diameter, the splines approx 5/8" o/d, and there are 36 splines on the shaft. I've spoken to Darren at Caterham, and he said he thought the original steering column was out of a mini... but having compared my column splines/dia to the various mini boss kits which are available, none will fit. Also, I've spoken to the guys at Merlin and at Rockshore, and one suggestion was that the column was out of a Triumph 2000 1970-73... but that won't fit either ! Anyone know which car the orignal steerng column came out of... or better still, which Momo / Mountney / other boss adapter I need to do the job? Any advice gratefully received. Stationary M25 Traveller Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I have just bought one of these from 7tips. Much nicer than the splined QR type, which wear and rattle after a while ! They sell the QR boss, already welded to upper steering column ready to fit into a Seven.
Adrian Williams Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 You're right they are indeed very nice but they wont fit a 6 hole wheel, they have 3 fixing holes and are designed to be used with a motorsport wheel with a flat blank centre that is then drilled to suit. A six hole wheel is design to be used with various bosses to suit the splines in various road cars. Stu how big is your wheel because it might be too big for the seven? Adrian
Mr Locust Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Have you tried Triumph Spitfire MkIII? Ian Green and Silver Roadsport 😬
StuC Posted July 28, 2010 Author Posted July 28, 2010 Hi all Many thanks for your speedy replies (I like this club already and I've only been a member 5 minutes!). Dave K also just sent me a message (thanks Dave) letting me know that it's out of a Spitty, but his advice was that (because the Spitty boss adaptor isn't available), the easiest way is to use a spa design qra103 3 bolt to 6 bolt adaptor £20.00 + vat and use either the standard caterham quick release or the fixed standard 3 bolt boss >> My wheel is 280 mm, which is about right... I prefer a light steering feel and find the 260 a bit too much of a shirt button for me... others may disagree (!)... perhaps I'm just a wimp! 😬 Many thanks for all your help though. I don't know much about Sevens (yet) but I've built kits in the past & worked on motors a fair bit (including some absolute nails), so hopefully I can return the favour in the near future. StuC Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 Hi everyone - thanks for your help & advice. Job now done using SPA 3-bolt to 6-bolt adaptor plus BG Quick Release Steering System (from Merlin). I needed some additional fasteners too, which I got from the brilliant guys at APEX Fasteners on Slough trading estate (apologies to anyone not in the area, but they have got everything!). ATB, Stu
