Took my cover off many times and never resealed it. Never had any leaks and it's much easier to check and top the oil up than struggle with the filler plug .

Really no leaks? Is there no pressure that the oil presses out there?

No real pressure in the gearbox unlike an engine.

 

The gears do splash the oil around but the only place I have had a leak was on the speedo drive and that's quite common.

When I had my 6 spd refreshed by Road & Race they used a thin bead of silicon sealant on the mating faces. I removed the cover later to drill and fit a plug to allow the oil level to be checked and topped up from within the engine bay (worth doing if you have the cover off to save scrambling under the car) and used one of the Locktite silicon sealants - can't recall the number but it's designed for metal to metal mating surfaces without a gasket and got it from Halfords. Not sure if it would leak without but based on what R&R did I thought best to seal it!

Sorry for next stupid question... but when the car stands on ramps or a hill... could it be a problem without sealant??? Don’t want to reseal it too... but I am worried ;-)

Not much oil in a gearbox or diff ! Only about a third full.
