Drumster
I am about to replace the original ignition system on my 1700 supersprint with either a Lucas competition system or a 3D mapped ignition system. Can anyone offer advice on which one to go for? Money is not a burning issue but perceived value for money is. Therefore what system did you buy and why? and what have been your results/experiences to date? Many thanks Chris Alston
Graham Sewell
This is something that I have wondered about as well. The early 3D systems were unreliable - but for me it was a case that I don't want any more chips in my car than absolutely necessary - (electronic igntion from Aldon). In terms of making the sparks, all the systems are pretty good (Aldon, Lucas, etc...), but from what I gather, if you want to improve fuel economy and mid-range response, then 3D is the way to go. For my money, I'll stick with the basics as I know that I can repair them more easily when (not if) they break. Cheers, Graham
John E
Roger King fitted a Lucas competition system to my crossflow and I have to say that it performs very well. The spark is very powerful and even with a flattish battery will fire the engine. MPG is an issue, currently 20ish, but the system is simple and I believe that I have made the right choice. Casbar
Chris, I decided to replace my unleaded ignition system on my 1660 x-flow earlier in the year. I took advice from both James Whiting and Roger King on the way forward. The Weber 3d system looked like a good idea, especially if you were are planning to change your x-flow for a zetec at a later stage. The 3d will provide better response all the way up the rev range, but no more top end. I wanted to do the work myself, but found out that fitting the sensor on the flywheel needed the block drilling, sounded a bit technical. Also, Weber do not build a bracket as yet for the x-flow. Extra fuel saving is questionable, especially when you look at the difference in price. I went for the lucas competition system. Fitted it myself in about an hour and it works really well. I am very happy with the system and have found a difference from the uleaded original one. Basically anything is better than the original. Speak to Roger King he will run through the pro's and con's of each system. Rgds,Robert
Graham Sewell
My understanding is that the Ignitor systems were not that bad. Just the older 'Lucas' lord of darkness (as opposed to racing) variant was totally worthless.
Roger King
Weber do now supply bracketry to fit the Crossflow, and it saves a huge amount of time and hassle.
