Do cracks in windscreens always grow?

Hi,

I've just received delivery of a second hand windscreen, which I've just noticed has a very small (10mm or so) crack at the very top edge.

As it stands visually it doesn't bother me, but I'm concerned it will grow and will rapidly render the screen useless.

Do windscreen cracks always grow in the end? Pic here

Hi Martin,

Not a very scientific answer, but I've had a crack on my screen for nearly a year and it hasn't grown at all. After this length of time i'd be suprised if it suddenly starts growing.

I believe that Halfords do an inexpensive kit to repair chips in windscreens, if it does bother you, or if you need it fixed for an MOT, for instance.

given some temperature variation and winter is coming and water chances are that it will grow. On the family Ford Fiesta A small chip , well below MOT size, that appeared stable grew to over 18" long in about 1 minute on a cold day when the demister was on. A windscreen installer mate of mine says the real problem is if water gets in generally then they are beyond recovery.

hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for the thoughts. I doubt it's very fixable as from what I can see the crack has started at the edge under the ali frame, so no chip to fix?

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine started in exactly the same possition but didn't creep for months. Then on a early morning, shall we say faster than usual blat down the M20, I acctually watched it creeping & after a couple of minutes it was half way down the screen. I assume the high wind pressure was enough to set the crack moving.

Nice new screen obtained & I fitted it so no excess to pay, thanks to MSM insurance *thumbup*
