Gingerbread Man
An update to my 'Oil Pressure and Tappets' thread. Today I dropped the sump. Once dropped I found a large (50pish if not slightly bigger) piece of the gasket which had broken off. There was a small piece of foam that had come loose, a few bits of grit/ chippings that you get after a freshly scrapped road. Picture here. How would the gasket have split and broken up, any ideas welcome. Secondly, after cleaning up the sump, I found that it's blistered in two places towards the front. There is no sign of leaking nor have I ever seen one - sump. The oil pressure was fine up until recently where I think the broken piece of gasket was blocking the oil pick up pipe. Also, the metal 'sump baffle plate' has a dent in it too!! Arrrgrggrhhhhh!! As you can see I like to take pictures. Stationary M25 Traveller
Good to meet you both this morning. Hope it stayed dry for your return journey ... it looked awful black the way you were heading !! That w-section baffle plate doesn't do a lot, so dents in that won't matter. Don't forge to bash some dents in between the 'pips' on the underside of the oil pick-up to increase the gap between it and the sump.
Gingerbread Man
It was good to meet you as well Ian. Thanks again for the oil. So I need to bash some dents into the end of the oil pick up pipe as shown here? Who can weld my sump nearby? I'm going to contact a few people today and hopefully I'll get a hit. If not, anyone local? A Blatchatter? Edited by - Gingerbread Man on 15 Jul 2009 17:12:
Simon.H
My old sump gasket was falling to bits in much the same way: Picture Common problem maybe? Not good really. Simon niknak.org
Myles
My gasket is failing in a similar way - particularly around the bolt-holes where the pressure from the bolts is gradually cookie-cutting through the gasket. It's been on and off the car so many times though - I've lost count. Next time I do sump-off, I will replace it. Don't forget to drill a couple of extra holes as recommended by DVA... 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Ecosse™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Gingerbread Man
What size holes out of interest? 5mm? I'm off to see a welder in a minute to see what can be done.
Stationary M25 Traveller
Ouch - that is some severe bruising to the sump !!! What sort of clearance do you have under it with you on board ? Holes in gasket (new one I assume !) look to be the same dia as the bolt holes in Oily's photo in your other thread. The dents are to the face of the metal housing that hold the strainer gauze .. in between the pips. Don't forget to make sure the o-ring around the top end of the oil pick-up pipe is in place when you refit it.
