scooby dooby doo
a cheaper / nicer / better route is to buy just the cams off somebody and then get an aftermarket mappable ECU. If your exhaust isn't a long 4 into 1 then you need one of those as well, you can get a new one made up to your ideal spec by independant companies for a similar price to the caterham one and you get a much better result. I changed just the ECU on my 1.6 K SS and gained so much low down that pulling away in 3rd was better than it used to be in 2nd (6 speed box). Big improvements up to around 3000 rpm and a bit all the way up. The MEMs ECU is designed for a metro/rover 200 etc to use little fuel and breathe through a restrictive induction / exhaust system. In a Caterham its really not very close to ideal. Dave Hooper - dmch2@lineone.net
Ted_7
Are u sure it's cheaper ? Can u give me more info about that transformation ? Is it reliable ? I have the standard short 4 in 1 exhaust. Thanks in advance Edited by - Ted_7 on 5 Jul 2002 09:32:
scooby dooby doo
sorry - correction. Caterham charge 1800 (inc VAT) i believe to supply and fit an SS kit. A new ECU, s/h cams and a new exhaust comes to about 600 + 150 + 500 + fitting (inc VAT). that's cheaper. What do you mean by reliable? The ECU is reliable. (many seveners use an Emerald ECU and there are other types as well) What's more its programmable - so if you change something later you don't have to bin it. Ted_7
Reliable means that I don't want to see the engine exploding after 10.000kms eek.gif I use this car everyday Se7enly, Ted_7
scooby dooby doo
same cams so mechanically its the same. if anything the negine will be safer as it will run a bit richer and so won't run so hot... I've heard of several MEMs or MBE (on the SLR) ECUs failing but havn't *heard* of an emerald failing. and being made in smaller numbers means they'll repair it if it breaks whereas Caterham would just sell you a new one and ask for another 600 quid...
