Ade Ray
My firm has an internet site currently hosted by Softnet (part of jungle.com) The site is free but the address is rather long and unwieldy: www.soft.net.uk/firstresidential/ We want to go .com or similar but we are looking for advice about this and we have a few questions: 1. can we keep our existing site but buy in a new name. 2. Should we/can we buy the name and space on a site outright 3. how much should we be paying for the name / site 4. where is the best place to look for buying domain names and space. Any advice or comments on your own experience would be greatly welcome. Ade smile.gif Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent
dan mackman
Hello, yes you can keep your existing site and also buy a new name you register the name and pay for hosting (the sapce on the isp server where your page will live) to register the name can cost from as little as a few quid to a few hundred quid and you can register it for 1, 5, 10 years etc so its is sort of out right but once expired any one can register it again if they beat you too it (you will be sent a reminder) how much you pay will depend on a multiple of things and you may find that both the .com and the .co.uk have already been take but you can have something like .net or .bis etc The best place to look is places like Netnames.co.uk or even freeserve. if you need any more help call me as i work for a web design agency and can put you in touch with people. Vinnie
Hi, 1. can we keep our existing site but buy in a new name. Yes, you can use a "pointer" which means if I type www.yournamehere.com in the browser it relocates me to the original site - easy but not elegant as the user now sees (probably) the old site name anyway. 2. Should we/can we buy the name and space on a site outright I have. Domain costs peanuts, e.g. 50 dollars. Site hosting costs about 150 - 200 USD per annum. My site is hosted in the US and I pay 204 dollars per year. In addition to 350 mb of space on the server I also have 100 email accounts. VERY easy to setup and manage. The location is irrelevant, it could be next door it can be in the USA, so what, you connect with your PC. Also, you can have someone else build and maintain the site if you don't want to. 3. how much should we be paying for the name / site See above. 4. where is the best place to look for buying domain names and space. Try www.netsol.com they have loads of easy to use tools for checking prospective names. Vinnie andrew@barriskell.com

Ian B
Try here they seem quite cheap to buy/register a domain name, you get a free .info domain as well for a limited period, and they will 'point' your new domain name to your existing site FOC. They seem to to do reasonable hosting services as well. Ian - MI 5EVN
