stop cars getting nicked

With all the talk of cars being pinched ……… how about starting a full caterlog of all owners cars. I have a digital camera, with witch I can take all kind of shoots of a car ( serial numbers/ parts etc) which can be dumped onto a cd-rom.

I am more that happy to do this for club owners in my patch, If we can document all local cars…….. then if one does go amiss……. We would stand a good chance of finding it.

I’ am sure that this could be done all over the country.

Any comments !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Carshalton in Surrey.

We were walking round Bicester Village a couple of years ago and bumped into a couple who were also clutching their steering wheel blush.gif At least it was a momentary talking point between we normally reserved Brits wink.gif

Better to look like a muppet carrying your steering wheel than walking round the streets crying.

Having said that I would have thought that bugglers who take the full trailer/car etc. will fully realise that a wheel and boss isn't going to set them back that much (so is only really any good for the opportunist crim).

What worries me a fair bit is that the Caterham community is pretty small, yet there seem to be increasing occurrences of theft (which would indicate "theft to order"). Surely stolen ones appear somewhere pretty sharpish.

Best bet is to keep your own records and make (secret) note of any particular blemishes your car may have. These could be imperfections in the bodywork/interior, odd spec's, oddities in the way standard items have been implemented etc.

I'm sure I could spot my car easily if it was stolen...

Did anyone see on Tomorrow's World the spray with millions of "micro dots" that each contained a unique piece of information? You spray it on the important bits of your car (it is colourless) so should the car get stolen and dismantled, it is possible to identify the original car from any component by the code on the micro dot .....

(at least that is how I interpreted what the article was about!... TW can be a bit over simplistic sometimes!)

Alex -

The microdot technology you mention is used by Honda (and possibly other motorcycle manufacturers) to identify a bike down to its component parts.

I believe that they started using it on the current model CBR600, although I will probably end up being corrected about that! wink.gif

Whether you can have it applied at a later date, I don't know...

I wonder who the manufacturer of the stuff is and I wonder how much it costs...?

If we approached them as a group of however many we are I wonder what they could do for us? If word got around that we had done such a thing it may act as deterant to the brain dead criminals who steal our cars.

I had a chat with a bike owning colleague, who suggested this, as he's had this applied to his bike (a condition imposed by his insurers): here

The motorbike DIY kit is 50 quid according to the website.

Halfords stock the micro-dot kit (the one in Inverness, so most would). It looks like a touch up paint pen. apply a small blob to every bit of your car, then register the kit. easy.... I cant remember the price!

I just need a 7 now to put it on!!!

M&P are a bike mail order house, they do Data Tag, Alpha Dot and clear water taging kits for bikes, all are sub £60. There web site is www.mandp.com Demon Tweeks also do bike bits and should sell the same kind of kit.

Using a cycle lock to secure the steering wheel to the roll bar seems a good idea to save carrying it - and with a full cage you can even leave it in situ and lock it on to a leg teeth.gif

I read an article in the Evening Standard last night about how kids torch 10,000 cars per year in London and play chicken with them. By this, the game is as follows - 4 kids get in a stolen car. THe car is then set light and the first person with enough sense to jump out is branded a chicken. Personally I'd lock the doors and throw away the keys!!!!
