"Virus advertising"

Can any one tell me if there is a way of removing/blocking/this virus advertising that pops up on your monitor screen when you are online. And NO I have not been naughty looking at the tits and bums type sites either you lot. I am especially interested in getting rid of "Gain" adverts. If some one has contact details as to where I could send the lads around to or hurl a brick through their office window I would be much obliged. It is really giving me the S**TS all this garbage coming through.

Zonealarm is great. If you aren't happy with countless pieces of software reporting back your activities, it's a real boon.

Anyther great freebie is Panicware's Pop-up stopper. When you get it, set it to aggressive, and you never need see an annoying pop-up again. Only downside is that it blocks the useful little java-windows, but you can temporarily disable it on the taskbar.

I forgot to mention, Zonealarm is great but its not a panacea, there are a few interesting comments about it (and other personal firewalls) here, especially the 'snake oil' link at the bottom. (adbuster / webwasher / intermute arent firewalls and dont work in the same way)

I have Zone Alarm Pro running here at work, and not only does it stop pop-ups and banners, but if you set it to high security for cookies, it'll never update a web page by reading cookies, so Blatchat's "New" post markers never change............ It also gives an eror message when replying to posts which makes it look like the message hasn't been sent (that's why I have made a couple of multiple postings recently blush.gif)Makes reading Blatchat a bit of a chore actually, so I'm going to lower the cookie security. Blocking pop ups also blocks the "edit posting" icon from loading in the forums. I need to play with the settings a bit, so be prepared.............

I was talking about the free version of ZoneAlam rather than the Pro one - I didnt realise it could stop popups.

I stopped using it at home though because with windows XP my dialup connection kept dying at random and the only cure was a reboot. I tried different ISPs, different modems but only when I uninstalled ZA did the problem go away. This was a while ago and I havent tried it recently

FWIW I use the Sygate personal firewall (free) and Sygate home network for Internet connection sharing (about £35).

Between them they seem to keep my PCs reasonably "hidden" and the firewall also does application blocking and some more advanced rules (if you really want to go there).

It doesn't block the pop up ads though but tweakui (free) can be set to stop pop up boxes stealing focus so at least they stay behind the window you are working on.

Pop up boxes are used legitimately on many web sites (Blatchat and the Herts area sites being two examples) so disabling them completely can be a pain.

Good application blocking / logging is what you want to stop local apps reporting back without you wanting them to. And you'd be amazed what tries to 'phone home!

I've no idea if they work with XP yet though, I haven't gone there yet.

hi, i've had similar problems as you. You might have Spy-ware software on your PC. Download Ad-Aware from someone like cnet.com or zdnet.com. This program finds and removes ad and spy software and it is scary how much it can find!

On top of this, i have ZoneAlarm Pro. I am on a 512k cable connection and it has proved great value. Its quite amazing the people that try to access your pc! If set up properly i'm sure it can stop pop-ups. I haven't had any since i started using it.

One thing that is worth thinking about it your virus software. Make sure that it is always up to date and be careful when downloading stuff from 'unknown' sources! ;)

Ju's shotgun hopefully... Please Ju! ;)
