Alias
I've stareted getting an odd "ticking" noise from the engine. I think it's coming from the head. It is dependent on engine speed and only appears to occur when the engine is warm. Could this be my tappets??? The engine is a 1400ss. Nick Woods
Is it a 'K' ? - mine does this from time to time but then stops again after a while so I suspect its the hydraulic tappets. It certainly sounds like one of my previous cars which had a hydrualic tappet that was a bit noisy sometimes. A few people in the local group also say their K's have the same noise so I'm not especially worried about it. Its due a service soon so I'll ask them to check it out then Nick P8MRA - The greenid=green> one with redid=red> wings

old captain slow
One of my tappets is noisy (1600 K). It ticks at tickover (no pun intended) but goes silent at anything over tickover. Don't think it's anything to worry about unless it ticks at all speeds as I have been told it can then damage the cam if really bad. No idea how to track down which one is ticking and as there are 16 of them, trial and error is not attractive and changing them all is expensive £16 x 16 = £256! Alias
The engine is a K series and it occurs at all engine speeds. I've booked the car with a friendly mechanic, but don't really want to drive it for fear of exacerbating somthing. Shame coz it looks like it's going to be a nice weekend. I don't think it's an exhaust issue. I'll check the plug cover.
scooby dooby doo
knackered tappet noise is very obvious and gets much louder with revs. at idle its the loudest noise, at 2000 rpm its horrifyingly loud and sounds like a very rattly nasty thing. If its not *that* obviously loud then the plug cover or something is far more likely. PS how nice - I've just noticed i've become an anorak... Tony Martyr
Depends how acute your hearing is and the type of inlet manifold but the injectors make a ticking noise. I noticed it immediately I converted to TBs and initially made the incorrect diagnosis of tappet noise. It is a noise that is better damped by the plastic manifold but it is still there and can be checked with a listening rod.
Jason Plato
RobF , Is your 1400 ss a roadsport model with solid tappets ?? . If it is then they may only require reshimming ?? . Dave
