7Nut
SH*T, looks like Caterham have sold your old car! Oh well, least you've still got the 7 you were after. See ya Friday. thumbsup.gif
Gary G
I know! It didn't take as long as I'd hoped, but like you say, I got what I wanted so it ain't all bad. Is your car up and running now? C7 GAR id=red>
7Nut
Nope! Got a client in a minute, so will go online later tonight (whats new!). Cheers
7Nut
Hi Gary, Almost midnight! Worked on the car last Sunday, found that the problem with the electrics was (believe it or not) the main positive battery cable (from battery to master switch) had managed to work itself lose and was being worn away by the coupling point of the diff and prop. Have a removed the offending item and will fix tommorrow. Can't wait for the dyno session and sprint all in one weekend!!!! teeth.gif
Gary G
Doesn't sound too big a job then. It's funny, I know very little about fixing cars, but when I studied A-level electronics the first thing we were taught was to always check that the power supply was working before trying to figure out what was wrong. Despite this, I would never think to check the car battery before investigating a problem!! I'm looking forward to the Dyno session too. Then pro-karting at Buckmore Park the next morning!!teeth.gif C7 GAR id=red>
Al Crickmore
Then pro-karting at Buckmore Park the next morning You jammy git. What time? I might come along to watch.
Gary G
Al, it starts at 9:30am I think. Finishes 12.30ish. Come along to laugh at me if you want. The others have all done it before, but I've only done indoor karts with a max speed of 40mph, so it should be interesting... 7Nut
What a great day! Fixed car and then proceeded to go for a blat in the summer sunshine for approx 3 hours (saw Debbie on the way aswell), returning home to fit a rev-limiter. And finally, a quick blast to check it all works. MIRA here I come! Karting? Your only still in my good books as I'm sprinting! Who ya doing it with (karting that is!)? Remember the double right-hander after the start 'n' finish straight is flatout!!! Mind the slicks in the wet, teeth.gif
Gary G
Stew, 3hr drive this afternoon? The joys of self-employment eh? Doing karting with some friends - a grand prix thing I think. So you've done buckmore park before? I might need to quiz you on Friday afternoon... C7 GAR id=red>
Nick Woods
Hi Gary - how's your new car (its a Superlight isnt it?). Are you enjoying it ? I'm having a great time with Mark's old one Nick P8MRA - The greenid=green> one with redid=red> wings
Gary G
Hi Nick, Yeah, it's a Superlight. Absolutely superb. Going with some others on a dyno session tomorrow, track day booked at Llandow in July, looking to book a Cadence course before the summer is out. It doesn't get any better than this!smile.gif How's your new motor (apart from the corrosion!!)? Enjoying it as much as you expected? C7 GAR id=red>
Nick Woods
Mine's brilliant, I'm really enjoying it. I just wish I'd had one years ago. I use it as much as possible incuding driving it to work most days. There must be something wrong with it though because the 4 miles to work seems to take ages now and I keep finding myself on roads that are nowhere near work.... teeth.gif. I took my wife out in it last weekend for the first time (we've had problems getting a babysitter) and she loved it - she now wants one of her own. My only problem is that I'm still finding the steering tricky although I am a lot more used to it now. It seems very twitchy at times, especially in fast sweeping bends - I gave myself quite a fright the other day going round one at a speed which didnt seem excessive, yet I had a hard time keeping a smooth line. I'm beginning to suspect the geometry may need some tweaking, there's a lot of comments on here about toe-out making the cars ideal for the track but not so much for the road so I'll get that checked out first and see if it makes any difference. It seems that everything is adjustable so it should just be a case of finding the right setup although I'll probably leave that to an expert. The corrosion is only minor and judging by other car's I've seen its neither unusual or especially bad. Fixing the powdercoating is easy - I've already repainted the front end and am going to do the back soon. I've also started on the aluminium bubbling on the drivers side (there are a couple of smallish bubbles on the outer skin level with the bottom front end of the footwell). I took the inner trim panel out on Monday and Tuesday night and put some waterproof tape between the chassis tubes and the outer skin to break the electrical contact. I then soaked it in Waxoyl and WD40 and riveted it all back together. I need to repeat the process from underneath (part of the tube run is between the outside of the footwell and outer skin) and then I reckon it should be sorted so I can touch up the paint. I quite enjoy working on it, its a pleasant change to have a car where everything is within reach and relatively easy to work on. Blatman
Careful with the geometry. Toe IN or parralel for the road, toe OUT for positive turn in on track (or road, but....), but toe out will make it tramline on our lovely roads. Mid corner twitching could be bump steer, which should see you paying attention to the way the rack is mounted. Raising or lowering it a little should help, but you'll need to "re-set" the tracking, and maybe camber angles, once you have finished.
Peter Carmichael
Nick, You have mentioned twitchy steering at least twice now and I am looking at Angus and Tessa's 1.6 Supersport of similar vintage that has a bad case of twitchy steering which I would say verges on the dangerous. We will be trying out some remedies and if anything works I will let you know. Mark Piper
Nick, have you double checked the tyre pressures? I didn't find it twitchy at all and don't forget I did a track day in it too. As we found out when you test drove it, the tyre pressures were on the high side that day...
Nick Woods
Blatman - thanks for the info, I probably should have said that I meant to get the tracking checked put a little toe-in if it was set out. It does tramline a bit but I'd put that down to the tyres (195/50 Goodyear F1's on 15" Prisoner's). It also changes line a bit on bumpy roads when I'm going a bit faster than I should which I've put down to low profile tyres on stiff suspension as it does get quite bouncy ! Peter - thanks for the offer of help, I would appreciate anything you can come up with. I know I keep going on about it but I generally tend to rabbit on for ages and then finally do something - just see how long it took me to repaint the chassis from when I started on it smile.gif. I've not driven another seven or had anyone (other than Mark) drive mine so I'm still not sure if mine is how they are supposed to be and its just a case of me getting used to it. I might get someone at the next local meet to take it up the road and get another opinion. Mark - fair point, I havent checked the pressures for a few days. As I said above, you may be right - it could just a case of me having got too used to power steering smoothing things out so that I'm not used to proper steering any more. Its the first RWD car I've had for quite a long time and those that I have had were slow tintops. I'm still having a great time nonetheless, I just wish I'd had one years ago. teeth.gif Nick P8MRA - The greenid=green> one with redid=red> wings
7Nut
Hi Gary, So how was the karting then? I had bad news at the dyno place, founding out that I've a blown exhaust valve. So some engine surgery will be needed. Still did MIRA though as Guy (No Nuts) Russler gave me a drive in his 7. Gave him a shock as after the first timed run, I was quickest!!!! (never sat in the car before let alone drive it). In the end Guy came out on top but there was only half a second in it. We came 5th and 6th out of 27. Cheers Stew. Gary G
Stew, Karting was excellent. A bit like your MIRA story in that I've never done outdoor pro-karts before, but came 6th out of 20, when most of the others had been there a number of times before. I was only 4/10ths off the quickest lap of the day. Down-side was the "knitted rubber" gloves, which combined with my scarily tight grip on the wheel, meant I now have raw patches on the palms of my hands where at least 2 layers of skin have been removed. Can't even drive at the moment as a result!! C7 GAR id=red>
7Nut
Knitted gloves? Sounds slippy to me. Yah, I always wear proper racing gloves which enables me to the wheel in a relaxed, non-straining way. As for you speed, how come your so quick in a kart but not in a seven? confused.gif

Gary G
I guess I'm just too worried about hitting people/cars/animals on the public road. Plus my Seven is more expensive to fix than a kart!! So did I read it right: Guy needs to replace his wings after you drove his car? C7 GAR id=red>
No Nuts
Gary Stew needs to replace my wings after he drove my car. wink.gif It's all sorted and no worries. It was a pleasure to see the grin on Stew's face (before he removed said wings, he wasn't smiling too much afterward poor chap)!!
