john aston
....meeting is 23 June . I highly recommmend it- interesting people, fabulous cars (ERA Bugatti etc ) , committed driving and the Uk's best circuit by far. And no ***ing corporate hospitality or goons waving their pathetic little Jordan flags. And if you think pre war cars are slow - prepare for a surprise. And as for the noise and the smell (continued on page 39 )
FH
Wow John, thanks for that thumbsup.gif As we're unable to make Goodwood Revival this year because of cost thumbsdown.gif- this will be a gratefully received replacement for my much-needed fix of "R" wink.gif We're less than an hour's drive away, so this will be a definite, providing we can book the dog-sitter FH teeth.gif
stevefoster
My work pal Adrian will be competing in his 1929 Alvis. He was looking at my lines from the in car video I took at the Oct Slipstream track day. We weighed his car on my scales ~950kg, straight 6, 2.5l supercharged. Skinny tyres on large wires. No harnesses for these boys... Mark Piper
Spot on John - good crowd and always cheap (free sometimes if you know the right people...or used to in my case). Who cares if the the crowd don't dress up in period clothing eh teeth.gif
john aston
Actually , Mark, some of them do dress in period style- if only because so many eccentrics seem to belong to VSCCand dress the same as they did before Suez. I do enjoy Goodwood but it has all become a little precious for me - Veuve clicquot tents etc - so I do prefer Cadwell to the Festival of Tweed. The 'sang' is a little more 'pur' as the Bugattistes would put it...Pretentious , nous ?
PeterS
In similar vein, the VSCC meeting at Prescott over the first weekend in August is a very special occasion. The price has been dramatically hiked to £15 per person, but it is still a wonderful colourful gathering. Not to be missed!
john aston
Anybody go then? Impressed as I was with the amazing machines in the car park and the sight and sound of a 24 Litre Bentley Napier trying to negotiate the Mountain . Or a Bugatti in full powerslide mode through Coppice ? Fabulous circuit and lovely people .End of advert .It beat watching ersatz racing from the ersatz Nurburgring ! stevefoster
Adrian came 2nd in the last race of the day. He almost lost it into the tyre wall on his 2nd practise lap. Amazing how quickly you learn that bit of the circuit.... All in all he had a good day. He now wants hydraulic brakes. The cable ones are high tech but not up to it... Nifty
Copied from Brooklands site: Bentley-Napier This car's beginnings comprise a complicated history, finding it's origins in the Sunbeams Tiger and Tigress. In the mid nineteen sixties its creators Peter Morley and David Llewellyn acquired the Tigress rolling chassis and fitted a Napier Sea Lion engine which Morley had found in a brickyard in Colchester where it had been stored for a number of years waiting to be used as a generator. The massively engined special made its debut at Silverstone in 1968 and was raced for several years with various modifications. In 1972 the car was rebuilt into a Bentley chassis, subsequently crashed heavily and in 1980 a new body was fitted with a nose very similar to that of the Napier Railton. This car has won many awards including the Itala, Boulogne and John Holland trophies and continues to race regularly. The twelve cylinder engine has a capacity of 24,000 c.c., runs on three SU carburettors and has an estimated power output of 550 bhp. The gearbox is four speed and the brakes are hydraulically actuated drums running in 19" front wheels and 20" rears. Length is 161", wheelbase 120". Fancy driving 550 bhp on such skinny tyres, so much weight and drum brakes. Must have balls of surgical steel!!!!
john aston
Thanks for the info- wonder how much torque ? Enough to move a small town I guess. I won't prolong this thread but if you are feeling jaded about motorsport try the parallel universe that is the VSCC.
Nifty
Goodwood Revival has to be some of the best spectator racing you'll see. Very active, close racing and glorious noises and smells!!!
john aston
I have attended two Goodwood revival meetings , after making myself very unpopular in Motor Sport's letters page by suggesting there was other motorsport worth seeing other than the sacred cow of Goodwood . And I stand by that. G/W is a fantastic meeting with truly wonderful machinery, brilliantly organised and so on but it is all a little too smug for me.The dress code is a joke and the whole thing is in danger of becoming part of 'the season '. Nifty
You don't have to dress up, however, it is part of the point of the event, rather like dressing up for Royal Ascot.
john aston
Sorry but I regard wearing a jacket and tie as dressing up.And you can't get into the paddock at Goodwood without wearing ditto. Ascot epitomises the issue- I go to motor racing events because I am an enthusiast, not because I am taking in an event which is part of the 'season'. How many hard core horse racing enthusiasts at Ascot compared to the 3;15 at Pontefract? Same as Silverstone GP - full of mindless Jordan supporters who spend too much time watching the box and not enough time watching live motorsport. Bah humbug etc
Nifty
I feel your missing the point John...It is the Goodwood Revival. It is not an ordinary classic car race meeting - the whole reason d'etre is the REVIVAL bit, revivng the days when racing drivers wore bowties, were sportsmen, smiled and socialised with each other, and children did as they were told!! One can't get a paddock pass unless one is a member, and presumably if you are prepared to get membership then you are willingly going along with the whole thing anyway. Would you attend a Sealed Knot event in jeans and T-shirt?? Nifty. P.S. When I went last year I was not in period dress.
john aston
Its recreating a past that never existed; I have been a member of GRRC ,if only to gain access to the paddock but it is firmly grounded in Planet Twee - or perhaps Smug?
Nifty
Good grief man, Don't go telling Mr Moss or Salvadori that.
