Super_Rich_Bernie
I had 4 tyres fitted on saturday. The price was quoted all in, so it wasn't until I got home and looked at the invoice that I saw 'Environmental Disposal Charge' at £1 each for the old tyres. Is this money going to the government? I have no problems with the old tyres being disposed of responsibly, just don't like to think that Phoney Tony & co, or Merton Council have found another stealthy way of stinging the motorist. Anyone else seen this? I imagine that disposal of old engine oil will incur a similar charge. Jonathan
deeps
Your right, a lot of garages are now charging for disposal of oil, batteries and other consumables. What a great source of revenue this is. Simos
Ask for them back and dump them at your local tip which is free and has a section for oil/batteries etc etc.
Eric McLoughlin
There are a number of "environment" taxes around, some are EU derived and some are entirely home grown. Don't blame "Phoney Tony" for them all either. One of the most punitive of these taxes is Landfill Tax which was introduced in the mid 90's by the previous mob. Like all taxes, it is up to the retailers to decide whether they want to recoup the tax directly from their customers. Most will in some way and many will wish to show it as a separate elemnt of the sale price - in order to ensure the customer is aware that an element of the sale value is due to a government levy. I'm sure most of you will have seen Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) shown in this way on your renewal notices. One to watch out for in future is "Carrier Bag Tax" - this has just been introduced in the Irish Republic and takes the form of a 10 cent charge for each bag issued at the checkout. It's understood that the UK Treasury are looking at introducing something similar here.

stevefoster
A normal refuse site will not take tyres. I know this because the one on the A322 between Bisley and Bracknell refused a woman who had one. I think there are bigger depots that do it and these may even charge. Area Representative Tin Man Posted June 10, 2002 Area Representative Share Posted June 10, 2002 Eric, what about Phony Tony`s new "aggregate tax" @ £1.60 a tonne. This has added approx 35% to the cost of aggregates in Cornwall @ who ends up paying. Is this really going to save the enviroment. Eric McLoughlin
If it moves - tax it. Unfortunately, once a new type of tax is introduced, it is in for ever. Also, what happened to the pledges to reduce the basic rate of tax to 10% and to abolish Stamp Duty. Both made about 1990 and now quitely forgotten. Unfortunately, as they were Tory promises, Labour don't feel obliged to honour them and they didn't feature very highly in the Conservative manifesto at the last election either. Johnny Boy
The £1 tyre disposal charge is what the tyre fitters are charged to disposed of the tyres, not a tax - FOR ONCE!!. It's usually 'built in' to the cost of the tyres, but in the world of ever (seemingly) reducing prices, everything that can be removed from the quote price will be. Kwik Fit recently quoted a very good price for tyres for my tintop...until I discovered fitting, balancing and valves were extra!!!!
John Reay
JohnnyBoy, Did Kwik Fart quote you for the air they would have to put in the tyres as well wink.gif Next we'll be getting charged just for entering the premises to have the tyres fitted. Super_Rich_Bernie
In response to the 'did they charge you for the air'? No - the price was quoted all in at £45 a tyre - and that included balancing, fitting and this disposal charge. The bill just itemised all the components, with the tyre at £30. This wasn't Kwik Fit - was a place called RSR in Sutton, who I'd recommend to others in search of Bridgestone tyres. Jonathan
