Oh dear. I have just made up a new oil feed for the dry sump return to block on our crossflow car, as I wasn't happy to have the feed through the oil pressure guage takeoff hole, way too small for my taste.

I had a steel cover plate where the original oil pump and filter housing went, and I believe the oil return should be to the upper, front hole in the block, above the drive spindle and near the upper forward bolthole.

As it was very hard to see what I was doing with the car in an awkward position in a dark barn, I took the oilpump/filter housing with me to the local blacksmith and we worked out the position for the new hole in the blanking plate from this.....only it's a slot, rather than a hole, when viewed on the face of the pump housing, so unfortunately a guess was made as to the best position for welding on the threaded boss for the return pipe....I thought the mating face of the block had the same slot shape as the pump housing.

WRONG!

It's a round hole in the block, and my new plate and boss, if I'd just fitted them as I nearly did inthe near darkness of the barn, would have wrecked the engine in 60 seconds or so, as the oil would have been returning to a position where instead of the oil channel in the block, there is solid metal.....the two holes touch as the waistline of the figure '8'.....serious oil starvation time!

Fortunately I did check it, so all's well except I need to make a new plate.

Just to check, it IS the upper forward hole I want to feed oil into for the main galleries isn't it? *wink*
