Mike Molloy Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 At the last MOT it was pointed out that there was some play in the left front wishbone lower joint. As far as I'm aware it is torqued up correctly (could be wrong mind!), so the question is - how does one repair this part? Thanks.
F355GTS Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Mike remove wishbone from Car, remove circlip, hit the bearing very hard from above, replace and refit I and many others have tried to do it while still on the car with no success Mark
shn7 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I prefer to use a couple of appropriately size sockets and a vice to "press" the old SJ out rather then the hammer approach. Don't forget to use bearing/stud lock when inserting the new SJ or you'll find you have more play again very soon. I know this for a fact 😳 😬 Steve. Mark w Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I have the same issue , Is this a standard bearing or is it easiest to buy from Caterham ?
Johnty Lyons Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 It's a std bearing available from any good beraing stockist. But for convenience it's on Caterham website and if you have a user profile it's very easily got. you pays yer money and makes yer choice 😬 jj N.I. Jason Plato Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 better quality bearings are available from Goldline stockists. here is C7 TOP Taffia rear gunner
Mark w Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 Well i ordered mine from Caterham as i wanted the easy option and didnt know what size to ask for elsewhere. They are not cheap are they !
millsn Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 I'd suggest liberally applying 3 in 1 to ensure the easiest time removing the bearing. Although they moved relatively easily initially, mine were prevented from moving all the way out by the presence of rust flakes. Nigel Mills - 2.0 zetec
Mark w Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Well i removed the alternator 🙆🏻 so that i could get the rear wishbone bolt out , removed the wishbone and tried the socket and vice method 🙆🏻 No way was that moving . Tried to tap out wih a hammer 🙆🏻 no go that way either . Had a glass of wine 🙅🏻♂️, tried the socket and larger hammer method . 🙆🏻 not working . Looked at the Caterham web site , £150 for a new wishbone went to the garage and as a last resort used an old piece of steel and a 5 pound club hammer , hey presto its out 😬 The old bush and seat is rusty , and it doesnt look as if Arch used any bonding agent, the new spherical joint would go in wih a bit of a heavy tap but should i use some bearing sealant ?
shn7 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Yes using bearing/stud lock. Steve. Sussex (West) AR Not forgetting Percy the Polar Bear
