paulyb Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I've got a bit of an oil leak from around where the gold coloured scavenge filter assembly passes into / through the sump (K series dry sump) None of my (generally adequate) collection of O-rings seems to be the correct size. There should be 2 O-rings, one between the plate and the sump and one between the plate and the pipe that connects to this. Can anyone confirm the correct sizes for these? PS - asked at Caterham who sent me a couple but they were completely the wrong size so hoping to visit local motor factors......
Irrelevant Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 If Caterham don't even know the size, I suspect there are several sizes so it's probably best getting ones that fit your car. Maybe get yourself one of those selection boxes of O-rings . .. Everything from 3mm to 50mm - very handy, and only about a tenner from Screwfix(IIRC).
SimonArk Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I had a similar problem a while ago. I am assuming the Screwfix box of assorted "O" rings is the same of similar the one supplied by Machine Mart in which case none of the seals are suitable. They are all too big in section. Talk to Brett at Caterham Midlands, it took a couple of tries but eventually he got it right and I believe they have stock. Simon. Yellow Roadsport DVA
paulyb Posted November 23, 2007 Author Posted November 23, 2007 Thanks both - yes: I've got one of those large 'selection packs' The problem with this is that it is quite a large diameter O-ring but only thin in section so nothing in the pack fits. I guess I'll end up having to take the part off the car and into a factors to get one, though due to my present complicated car storage arrangements (I'm in London and the car isn't) I was hoping to avoid this and be able to get the part prior to next 'seeing' the car. Simon - thanks I'll try speaking to Brett later today and get something posted out if no one on here can help with the size
Englishmaninwales Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I renewed these on my DS system, and CC supplied the correct O rings, so I suggest you ask them again
Peter Carmichael Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Failing that, I am about to put in an O-ring order with a supplier. If we can get sizes I can tack these onto the order. Mine could probably do with a refresh anyway. Minimum order quantity is 16 of each size, but usually works out cheaper than individual rings via a middleman. Someone send me the size. Inner diameter and diameter of the ring cross-section.
Area Representative Richard Price Posted November 24, 2007 Area Representative Posted November 24, 2007 Or visit a local industrial bearing supplier. Most bearing specialists stock bearing, bushes, belts, seals etc. Quite often, its not worth they're while doing all the paperwork for a couple of "O" rings. If you have the correct diameter material, but its too big in diameter, its possible to cut and rejoin with superglue. I would not advocate that if it were an application where there was movement, but joining two flanges, it should be fine.
paulyb Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 Called CC Midlands yesterday and spoke to Brett who reported none in stock but would order them and post out in the next few days. Peter - thanks for the offer - I'll make a note of the size when they arrive and I've checked they are correct and let you know, but hopefully I'm sorted so don't feel you have to delay placing your order otherwise.
