Terry Field Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 I want to change the bolts which hold the flared wings on my '96 X Flow to stainless steel. There are two sizes used. Anyone know what size they are, and where I can get small quantities of stainless bolts and washers Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.

j passfield Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 IIRC they are 1/4 and 5/16, or you could use 6mm and 8mm, if you are near to the coast find a local yacht chandlers, most marine hardware is stainless steel.
Terry Field Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Thanks for the links Any one have any clearer idea on the sizes? I suppose I could buy a selection (most likely to be imperial - 1/4 or 1/16 as suggested) but it would be good to be sure. Cheers Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
Gavin Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 The small bolts on my '96 flared wings are metric - M5. Not sure if the larger bolts are metric but they have 1/2'' / 13mm heads.
Area Representative Crudders Posted November 19, 2007 Area Representative Posted November 19, 2007 Terry - the smaller machine screws that attach to rivnuts in the side skin are definitely M5 (8mm across flats). I'm pretty certain that the larger machine screws, that attach to the chassis, are 5/16" UNF (1/2" across flats). Another good source for fixings at reasonable prices is Wright's Auto Supplies - they have stands at all the major kit car and classic car shows and can supply almost anything via mail order. Website here. HTH, Crudders
Terry Field Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Thanks crudders Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
alextangent Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Caterham do a pack of flare fixings. Perhaps the package is readable; I tried and I think I can see all the dimensions? Alex McDonald A loud 1700 SS
Graham Sewell Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Another good supplier in Namrick Cheers, Graham --- Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!
I.Mupferit Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 As Crudders says, the small ones are definitely M5 but as for the big one, a quick call to Bruce at Arch would get you the correct thread form and size direct from the horses mouth.........so to speak. Nemo Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Terry Best of luck getting the old bolts out without the rivnuts spinning (particularly the ones you can't get to easily). About 50% of mine did ☹️ when I did the flares to cycles conversion earlier this year on my '90 X Flow. Once known as KAP but now I'm no-one Flared wings to cycle wings and beyond Photos
Terry Field Posted November 20, 2007 Author Posted November 20, 2007 Just about sorted now thanks. M5's and 5/16 UNF. Nemo, I've had the wings off recently without any problems, so I'm hoping I'll be OK this time. If not - I'll be back for help 😬 Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
Terry Field Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 Just a quick update. Bolts are definitely M5 and 5/16 UNF. I bought them from www.stagonset.co.uk - very small quantities delivered in 24 hours No problem with the rivnuts *biggrin*except on one of the 5/16 which was easily fixed with a corresponding nut. New wings, new bolts, looking good. Is it worth taxing it before January - mmm! Thanks for all the help Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
