stormcp Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Hi Guys, Can anyone clarify how large the gap needs to be between the end of the oil pick up pipe and the sump pan floor in a standard wet sump?. Mine sits on the floor with a couple if mouse holes to prevent it sucking to the pan floor. I have read previous posts which vary from 2mm - 10mm. Any ideas? I still have a little tapping at times even though the oil level is o.k., oil release valve is o.k., pressure is accurate as I have checked with a manual gauge, new oil pump, tappets are also good etc etc..? stormcp Posted November 16, 2007 Author Posted November 16, 2007 Thanks Guys, Mark, it generally run 4 bar when warm over 3000rpm and around 1.5-2bar at tick over. Which I believe is fine. I have tried running the Vauxhall 10-40 oil which seemed to tap a lot more than the thicker mobile 1 15-50, however it still seems to rattle at completely random times, revs and conditions? Paul McKenzie Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Matt, Just dwell on it for a while and common sense will tell you what the gap should be between pick-up and sump- , mod it to fit and cut a couple of short slots/drill a couple of holes and that's as good as you'll get for a wet sump installation Just bear in mind you're talking about a shallow sump, carrying relatively little oil, and if you're cornering hard/on circuit/on slicks/oil level too low the pickup must be pulling air to a certain degree 😳 BTW top-end rattle due to drained hydraulic lifters is nothing to do with this, and is of no great significance, although a bit annoying Edited by - Paul McKenzie on 16 Nov 2007 20:56:37 Edited by - Paul McKenzie on 16 Nov 2007 20:59:36

The size of the hole in the foam for the pick up pipe was enlarged a while back to allow the oil to pool quicker around the pick up. If you have an old piece it might be worth modifying or replacing. Mine also taps a bit so would agree with Mark about using thin oil. For reference my oil pressure is 4 bar on initial start up, just over 2 bar at idle when hot and 4 bar when giving it some beans when hot. VX HPC - Loud and proud here Watch out, whatever hits the fan will not be distributed evenly
Bio Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Seems to be a common problem My wet sump VX 2.0 had these problems (rattly tapets after a high speed run) I fitted an apollo tank and also tried all differant oils but it did not fully solve the problem Eventualy I cut between two cooling fins on the sump and had a well welded into the sump and with an extended pick up pipe dropped the level of oil by 15-18 mm now the crank does not thrash about in the oil Problem solved and consistant good oil preassure John
Paul Deslandes Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 A couple of other things to consider when worrying about oil in a 16V Vx are: 1. change the foam baffle insert regularly, particularly if you are using synthetic or semi synthetic oil as there is evidence that these oils can cause clogging or breakdown of the foam material. It may look ok but the oil can't pass through the foam quickly enough. 2. do the SBD cam cover baffle plate modification, details on www.sbdev.co.uk. This stops the oil getting trapped and allows it to flow freely back into the sump. Easy to do, if a little tedious due to the need to remove all the sealant from around the mating face of the plate/cover.
